Big game Friday vs #1 Dalton

quote:

In Lee County’s place are Dalton (7-0) and Valdosta (6-1). Dalton will have the unenviable task of trying to hold on to its top spot after Friday’s Region 6AAAAAA game against No. 4 Harrison (7-0). The Catamounts are No. 1 for the first time since 1986, while the Hoyas, who moved up one position from last week, improved on their highest listing since 2007.

I drove by Northcutt stadium last time I was home and didn't recognize it. Made me sad.

I wish Marietta would get back to being worth a damn. I hear they have a phenomenal freshman QB, though.

They've always been more of a bball school (at least from what I remember) but I agree. I like when West Cobb has good programs. May'retta, HHS, MHS, etc

We were pretty good for 3 years when I was in HS, but then had a disappointing 5-5 season as a senior.

I grew up going to MHS football games since my parents and grandparents always went to the games. In middle school when I played football for the Jr Hoyas I started going to Harrison games on Friday nights with friends and teammates. When it came time for me to decide whether to attend Harrison or Marietta I was really torn and went back and forth on my decision several times. Ended up choosing Marietta due to my family ties there and the fact that I knew so many people who went there. Ended up finishing 1-3 against Harrison (0-1 JV, 1-2 Varsity) during HS, but it was always fun to catch up with some of my friends after the game.

sucka

In all fairness, the 2002-2003 senior team was stacked with D-1 talent

Yeah, those were the guys I grew up playing with. Played DE and FB with those guys for 3 years, some even longer during pound ball. All in all I don't regret the choice, I had a ton of fun in HS and it allowed me to live my dream of signing a football scholarship, but I still think about if I had decided to go to Harrison.

It was sorely needed. They should have ditched the history and built a new stadium by the new school though.

He's not too shabby. He's got a few stud receivers too.

I don't know, when you play there you feel differently about it. It was the same stadium my father played and won a state title in, same stadium that I saw Zeier and Travis Zachary and LeBron Mitchell play in. I can tell you this much, I spent my Freshman and Sophomore years at the Winn St school and Junior and Senior years at the new school; A new stadium was never even mentioned because it would not have ever passed. The alumni are very strong at MHS and we all hold Northcutt very dear. Not many schools in Cobb have been around as long we have and we take pride in that history.

I will say, the new stadium is an improvement over the Blue Devil that had been painted up there several years ago. It looked like it had Downs Syndrome and was trying not to shite his pants.

Marietta's refurbed stadium is legit. Harrison needs to do similar. Looks like a stadium that would be in Jefferson, GA. Good to see them doing well again, though. Building all of the new schools killed the program for awhile.

I've coached in the stadium for 15 years. I love the history, but it needed to be upgraded. The pressbox was a dump and the visiting sidelines were dangerous. I get the history part, especially being a history teacher myself, but after talking to past coaches I feel like it holds them back. Like having to travel to the stadium for home games and the kids who are playing their today don't care about all the history that goes into the stadium.

The new coach has taken doing a great job of recruiting players to Marietta. He'll need to do that every year to keep up the talent level.

Ha, now that you say that it did kind of look that way.

Friday did a decent job at recruiting, but it seems like every year we'd have 1 or 2 starters and a few other guys from the previous year fail a bunch of classes, get held back, and they'd be ineligible to play. Either that or they'd just drop out of school. That always hurt us when I was there.

I understand what you're saying about the stadium, but it still rubbed a lot of us alums the wrong way. Hell, Hap Smith stopped announcing the games partly because of it. Now, Hap won't tell you that unless you know him really well and I haven't talked to Hap in a long time, but I've heard from very reputable sources that he was not happy about the new stadium and press box.

I guess folks need to decide if they want to keep the history or gain a competitive advantage on the field.

Well, it was basically a plywood box towards the end. It needed to be upgraded for safety reasons.

He certainly did. I always loved how opposing coaches asked why the he never let a back up kicker live in his basement too.

Now the biggest concern is the growing Hispanic population. Burton said he only had about 600 kids to pick from for football.

All these new schools keep stealing our students and talent. Allatoona took all of Brookstone. That's a killer
