not true brother. someone always cares. I'm sorry to hear that you have to deal with this stuff. Maybe talk to a doctor about getting prescribed some medication though. and frick that "stop being a pussy" nonsense. Anyone who says that is an ignorant a-hole

There's people that care. Believe me.

Like I said, I've learned ways to cope. Medication and doctors are not the answer for me, but it can be a battle. It's just a really difficult concept for people to grasp that haven't lived it personally. I just wanted to try and articulate how it feels. I've got my own child on the way, so this example really hits home! I feel for his family and children, but I feel for Carl too! It can be so difficult to talk about. I don't even discuss this type of thing with my wife, but the anonymity of an internet message board makes it a little easier for me. This is a good reminder for me though whenever those feelings start creeping back in! And for that I thank you!!!

This makes me sad. I knew Carl in the mid nineties when he and Trey formed Squat. I worked at the Georgia Theatre and partied with him around numerous campfires after a show. We played congas together around more than a few late night fires in my buddies backyard. Never failed to see that guy smiling and being nice to anyone around him. He seemed so happy. This sucks.

Carl was very friendly, lively, gregarious, an excellent performer, never met a stranger, was good at keeping peace, etc. An all-around good guy with hundreds of friends and many more adoring fans.

Eldrewo,

Taking something like heroin out of the equation, how would someone so animated and seemingly happy just up and off himself?

If that is indeed what happenned, which is all still rumor at this point.

That's the thing, it is more than a dark spot. It's pure darkness. There is no light. The crazy thing is you can still go on with your daily interactions and smile and laugh. Inside your telling yourself it is fake. You laugh at a joke simply because others are laughing, but that nagging voice creeps back in and tells you that nothing is actually funny or enjoyable. The other crazy thing is the descent into the abyss really isn't gradual. One minute your alright, and the next minute you're completely encompassed with pain and dread in a way you think no one else could understand.

This is pretty much how I describe marriage to people

You're doing it wrong, then.

And I didn't know Carl, but I work with someone who knew him personally and he definitely shot himself. Didn't ask him any more than that. Just a sad situation.

Without knowing the particulars of his situation, I would assume he was just faking it. You condition yourself to go through the motions. I can remember times where I'd be with a group of friends and everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves, and I would be too. At least the visible me would be. At the same time, my internal dialogue would be racing. My brain would literally be telling me "You're not enjoying yourself. You're only laughing because you're supposed to. Go find a place to be alone. These people don't really care if you're around or not. You're only dragging everyone else down." It's an internal battle, and you train yourself to not give away any external clues. That would just make you an even bigger burden.

Thanks for all the well wishes. This isn't some cry for help. I've learned how to battle my demons and keep it at bay. Otherwise, I wouldn't even type these words anonymously. I just want to try and shed a little light on what depression feels like (at least for me). It's a really difficult concept to grasp if you haven't dealt with it directly. For that matter, it's difficult to grasp even if you have dealt with it directly. If you think you know someone dealing with the same issues, just let them know you care and are there for them, but don't push too hard. Sometimes, that will make a person just pull away more.

Well, you seem pretty articulate, so you should contribute more. I just infiltrated an underground shadow culture here for observational purposes so it may get interesting. The roster came out and these junkies are taking the body-weight changes from last year and injecting them directly into their veins. The one they call Dallas has to use one of the veins in his neck because he wore all his arm veins slap out. It's crazy. THey think I'm mocking them, but I honestly respect their dedication..

"CObain used a 20 guage target load. fricking bird shot...."

For a contact, or near-contact shot, bird shot will kill you just fine. Hell, the wadding alone would do some significant damage.

Cobain actually had to have a friend buy the shotgun because his pistols had been confiscated by the cops after they were called by his wife after he locked himself in a room threatening to kill himself one time........

ANyway, he told his friend the shotgun was for self-defense because there had been a break-in at his house.

So, they bought a 20 guage and some target load/bird shot???

Dumbasses.

SideNote: I remember reading an article a long time ago about a dude in Charleston SC that got robbed and shot in the face by the intruders with a shotgun loaded with 20 guage bird shot.....

It ripped his face off, but the pellets didn't penetrate his skull. So, he never even so much as passed out, but ran around his apartment complex knocking on doors for help, but nobody would let him in because he had no face and they were probably freadked out........so the poor motherfricker had to get in his car bleeding and faceless........and drive himself to a convenient store pay-phone where he called an ambulance.

And I think to myself.....

... What a fricked up world.
