Long story short I have high humidity levels in crawl space.

Option a) pay big money to seal the space and put in a dehumidifier

Option b) get my arse under there and install a ventilation fan and save big money

I'm thinking I should at least try the cheap option (b) before dropping serious coin.

Talk to me old wise homrowners of the DR.

I'll talk to you as a builder we don't build a home for less than 700,000. We seal all of our crawlspaces. It all depends on how long you plan on living there. How old is the house? How long do you wish to live there?

You wouldn't have gotten to the point of knowing there was a problem and coming up with options for remediation if the problem wasn't pretty bad.

I'd suggest both sealing and ventilating.

This is basically option b

I will build a wall between foundation and porch. To keep that air out and then add an exhaust fan to the vents on the side.

I would suggest going with a full seal its really really worth it!! But it also depends on how much you want to spend if your there for 5-10 you can get by with venting it and making sure its vented well though.

Be careful doing it yourself. If there is a high moisture % in the wood, when you completely seal off any humidity from getting in and vent out all the moisture, your wood is going to warp badly. You want your wood moisture content to be between 10-15%. Higher and you are inviting termites into the home, less and you get warped wood.

Air flow is the remedy. Just go with your option B and get some air moving in and out of there. This solved the problem at my house.

The retard level when it comes to the brown recluse is just off the fricking charts. They don't live in SC...there may be a member of the recluse family in SC but it not the brown, and it sure as hell isn't on the coast. Not to mention, 90% of all recluse bite heal without medical attention. In the history of....well, EVER...there is ONE confirmed fatality from a recluse bite...bit a 60+ year old diabetic man on the neck, and he failed to notice the bite for several days.

Literally nothing against Mexicans its actually a compliment to them. No one works as hard or as fast and as cheap!!! Yes airflow is key got to have it vented it wouldn't hurt while your down there to line the bottom with plastic I would say 6 mil it will make for easier times in the future.
