Between Zo destroying their RB on the very first play of the game and then the flea flicker, don't think I've ever seen a UGA team come out and set the tone so thoroughly in a big game and never really give it up.

Only time momentum shifted slightly was the Swift/Sanks fumble/non fumble and Chaney was a big reason why after half we regained it and cruised.

That play action pass to Nauta on 3rd and short to all but seal the game in the 3rd qtr was just a complete joy to watch unfold. Fromm arrived as this team's starting QB on that play and Chaney played Grantham like a fiddle.

He's starting to irritate me less and less these days. In the offseason I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt for a few reasons:

-True freshman QB
-Brand new system/team/staff
-Pathetic Oline
-Mediocre WR play

I mean, you can be an excellent OC but still look bad with all of the above. This year, we yet again have a TFr QB but the other 3 items are pretty much erased. The ONLY small qualm I have is not using Nauta more, but overall I can't really complain. It's amazing how much better an OC looks when the line actually blocks and the WRs actually catch.

And the only reason we haven't been using Nauta is because he wasn't giving 100% in practice. I'm assuming Smart lit a fire under his arse because he played a lot last night.

I thought it was a flawless game by Chaney

We looked well coached on both sides of the ball last night due to overall good execution with minimal mistakes. The 2 easy dropped passes were the main mistakes with excellent defense and otherwise solid offense. That was the best OL play I have seen from our team in many years.

This, and Fromm was 9/12 with two drops.

When you can win a game like that throwing only 12 passes, that is executing a game plan to perfection.

Did you all see where we ran the same run play 8x in a row on the last drive

Clearly you must have missed the part where we essentially conceded we weren't trying to score and rather run the clock out and keep our starters healthy. And clearly, you must have missed the part where it was working... that's the "imposing of our will" that Kirby has talked about for a while. We probably didn't want to put anything extra on film there, but I think you could have easily given to Hardman in motion on several of those plays and just embarrassed them.

User DawgHolliday had a decent post on this topic that I actually think has legs... going for it there was no lose for us: convert and show that you can impose your will (or have footage to get onto the team about even in a massive win) AND if you don't convert, you then put your 2/3rd string defense in good situational defense to try and stop them.

quote:

Sorry but he had 3 decent play calls this entire game and we executed on them.

Rewatch the game... there were plenty of well designed plays that were timely. If you legitimately think he only called 3 "good" plays through the game, you're essentially letting everyone on this board know you have a very limited understanding of football.

Also, the fact that we *did* execute on them should be the more impressive part. The OL looked night and day from what we're used to. Credit where credit is due, and Chaney and Pittman had those boys playing at a much improved level.

quote:

These inside power dive plays are killin me.

If we ran outside on nearly every play, you'd be killing Chaney for being too predictable. Cake... have. or eat. not both... Unless you're Chaney

quote:

The under-utilization of our TE's is baffling.

They were targeted at key times last night. We're simply not throwing the ball that often... we have a freshman QB... why in the everliving frick would we put the ball in the air more than we have to in a blowout? If you want to criticize him for the last 3 games on that front, fine, but they were 16% of our attempts and over 20% of our receptions last night... that balance seems about right. The numbers are low, but our passing stats are likely to remain that way if things are going "to plan".

quote:

Sounds decent but we honestly should have won this game 49-3.

I agree that we *could* have won 49-3. I think Kirby and Co played this about right though. Godwin's drop that led to a field goal would have put us at 35. If Miss State had put up any more of a fight, we likely don't grind out the majority of the 4th quarter so that likely results in another score. We're playing on a bit of a razor's edge right now with a tFr QB and Brice Ramsey as the only "viable" (and I use that word in the loosest possible context) option behind him until Eason is cleared. No reason to get cute...
quote:

Our TE's are huge mismatches.

Perhaps all-world Nauta should not piss coaches off by not giving full effort in practice... If we need to throw more, would love him to not be in the dawghouse.

quote:

Stop running Herrien, especially inside

Meh... If you didn't notice, we had a lot of backs rotating in. He ran 5 times in cleanup duty and a sporadic 4 times while the game was still "in contention". I think he might be pressing a bit to try and impress and rather than do what he did well last year and cut up field quickly, he's trying to stretch plays out a bit too much. Doesn't mean he should never see the ball again... no reason to put more wear on Chubb and Michel than necessary. Also, we have recruits out there that we are "auditioning" for as well... that rotation looks like a lot of room for people to come in and make some noise.

quote:

Get Chubb and Michel back in the passing game

Michel barely practiced this week... Chubb gets keyed on nearly every play... he's not going to have a lot of room "in space". The other backs who practiced well this week got some playing time... glad we had a comfortable enough lead to get them in, get some film, and hopefully coach them up further.

quote:

And for the love of god quit the wild-dawg BS.

I mean... I'm totally fine if we take it behind the barn and shoot it... but to his credit, when the players blocked, it worked... and Chubb did Chubb things. Hard to find fault there... Oh, and BTW, we had a 5* 2018 QB in the stands that likely sees a scenario where he could be running similar designed plays with an actual threat to keep and throw as well, regardless of who is starting at QB...

And just so there is no confusion, please don't take the above post as some "I <3 Jim Chaney" post... it's simply that he had a good game. As others have stated, going to have to see that repeatedly to make up for some of the baffling work we've seen from him prior to last night.

That call from Joe T on that Fromm flicker gave me goosebumps...
