So I take a new job ...

... and it's a real good job. More $$ than my last one, more power, a higher profile, nice people to work with, great office, etc.
Shortly after I take it I get an offer to teach at Georgia Southern. I would very much like to end my career teaching at a university, but that wasn't all that difficult to turn down.
Then last week I get an offer to teach at UGA. Starting August 14th.
Two months ago I would have jumped on it. But I can't after having just accepted the job I'm currently in (for only four weeks now). And it's not that I don't like the job I have - I really do. It's just that teaching at UGA is kind of a dream for me. I would take a lot less money to do it. My wife is on board too, as she loved it when we lived in Athens while I was going to school. Although she just signed a contract to teach high school for another year here in Tallahassee, so leaving for Athens in less than three weeks would not be good for her either.
Anyway, I sent them a nice letter thanking them and telling them to keep me in mind for any future openings.
Timing. Sometimes it's not exactly what I would like it to be.

Tell them to hire me. I work in education (sorta) and I'm very experienced (sorta) and I'm cheap and brilliant.
In seriousness, congratulations.

Well, the department involved must be desperate. I mean, other than offering me. I get an e-mail in late July for a teaching position that STARTS on August 14. Something clearly must have happened at the last second that fricked them over.
Wish to heck I could take advantage of it.

so...what you are saying is, you did not consult BVG concerning this career decision?

If they're asking this late it's likely an adjunct position, which doesn't pay well and has no security. Am I wrong? How many courses?

You'd think. Full time faculty, though. No salary stated, other than it would be "competitive". Regardless, money isn't that important to me at this point in my career. I'm pretty well set. But yeah, it's rather shocking to be getting an offer this late for a Fall '15 faculty position - at a high school let alone UGA. Something happened at the last second.
I started looking at college/university faculty positions around the country last October. A lot of the Fall '15 positions are filled by the end of November '14. But things always happen that cause emergencies, and this must be one of them.

This I believe. And when the timing involved forces my hand, I do believe there is a reason for it.

Good for you. Sounds like you're doing well regardless.

My wife is a certified teacher in Florida so I am pretty much stuck in this state. Tallahassee is not that bad though.

Your wife will have no problem getting a job teaching high school within 25 minutes of Athens. The surrounding counties are always hiring.

By the way..... Statesboro and Tallahassee..... kind of a long commute, right?

did you apply for the UGA job or did they just offer you out of nowhere (relatively speaking)?

We've been in Tallahassee for a little over two years now. There is a lot to like about living here, actually. My wife has her teaching degree from Georgia and can teach in both states, but she signed a contract to teach for a second year where she is at, and it would be pretty bad form for both of us to back out at this stage, even if she could get a high school teaching job in Athens at this late date.

Imo....
A dream is a dream. If you get the chance to live it, then go for it.

I put my resume and info on the Georgia University system clearinghouse and they got my info through that. Same place Georgia Southern got it. I also know the current UGA President through my time at UGA law school.

I live in Tallahassee. I would have moved to Statesboro if I had taken the job.

Without going into details, when I interviewed for my current job I looked my future/current boss and his boss right in the eyes and told them I was not taking the job to leave it in three months. And it's the type of job that they really could not afford to hire someone who would do that. I told them I wouldn't leave after three months, I simply can't then leave after three weeks. No way.
The dream is still there. It's just deferred. Hopefully. And my current position actually makes me more desirable for teaching positions at universities down the road, so ...
Regardless, I can't leave so soon after giving them my word, and my wife agrees, even though she would love for me to teach at UGA.

You are either a fricking idiot, or you aren't telling us the whole story.
What are you holding back?
Or are you a fricking moron? I know you've been drinking maker's tonight. You admitted it in another thread on SECR earlier.
Revisit this thread in the morning when you have sobered up, and willing to come to reality with us.
No more bullshite.
That's all I ask.
You don't have to tell me or us a damn thing. You can tell us all to frick off. That's your god given right as an American.
But we deserve better than bullshite.
