Not sure yet where I stand but I'm not gonna begrudge the kid for doing what he thinks is right...

This could force as many changes for CFB as it did when Herschel went to the New Jersey Generals after his Jr. year...

This will work for Smith because of his talent. Not signing an LOI works both ways, though. A kid could wait until the last second to enroll and find out there's no offer anymore, with no time left to find a new home.

Again - most schools will take a chance and hold a spot for a Roquan Smith. Lesser players will be taking a big risk.

oh ok. We're planning on getting to the lot in left field by about 8 to pregame. I probably won't stay for the entire baseball game but will catch at least 7 innings or so.

Understand what you are saying, but it goes both ways, you know. Kids promise to a school then back out...they promise to work hard and develop their abilities then go out partying and skip workouts.

It is not a black and white scenario. Reforms and changes could be used on both sides.

Yep, there are issues on both sides, player rights vs educational institutions making money off of players. I don't think there's any doubt that we're heading to a court ruling in favor of the players allowing them to benefit financially from autographs, etc. At that point we will basically have professional sports in college. I don't like the direction but it is what it is.

The "make a slave out of a college athlete" comment by Leghumper is a bad joke from my perspective. The truth is many schools are having to deal with ongoing bad behavior by too many of these so called student athletes who are basically using universities as either a stepping stone to an NFL career and could care less about the educational opportunity or as a partying outlet and are too shortsighted to live up to the terms of their scholarships. Some of these misfits would have never seen the inside of a major university if not for their athletic ability.

Here's my thought: Quit being a bitch and pick a team. This isn't the NFL; there isn't 25M on the line here.

Reminds me of that Bryce Brown kid from Miami a few years back who was committed to the U, fiddle-fricked around and then ended up at UTK for five seconds before going to KSU. Just obnoxious.

Richt should give this kid the finger.

Don't necessarily disagree with him, I'm already over this guy. Good luck to the kid in whatever he does in life.

Schools having to deal with player behavior is such a small issue in today's college sports world. It's really no worse that it ever has been, there's just more media coverage. Hell, regular students there for academic reasons get in trouble just as much.

Frankly, player behavior doesn't even belong in the same discussion as this LOI issue or any player compensation discussion. It's that small of a topic. We're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars vs. a handful of mostly petty offenses.

He can do whatever he wants. He is not oblidged to pick a college or even play. Will the teams let him do this? hell yes. Why, because elite players mean better football teams which means more job securirty for scores of people who make millions when they have winning semi pro football teams named after colleges...

Roquan should've faxed his LOI to UCLA at midnight Saturday and not told a soul. I suspect he's twisting himself in knots trying to please everyone. Also suspect he really wants to go to UCLA.

I believe the loi has to be signed by the parent unless the player is 18.

I propose an early signing period from June 1 till August 15 prior to the players senior year in HS. Also, Make the LOI binding on the player AND the school.
Any ther school that makes any contact with a player that has signed an LOI loses a scholarship each year for the next 4 years.
The main issue is to make both sides, player and school, bound to the LOI.

Good luck to the kid but no thank you anymore. This is ridiculous and inconsiderate to the grown men who are giving this kid attention. He's got to understand that these coaches are grown men who have families/wives/children to worry about and have better things to do than chase an 18 year old around. Again, good luck to roquan but we need to get to work with what we have.

good thing UGA coaches didn't take your line of thinking on Herschel Walker and Orson Charles

He's not the kind of player I want on our team. I want players who are committed to UGA because they want to be here and preferably have either family ties to our university or a family tradition as UGA fans. These are the kind of players who will leave it all on the field for our team and will not be involved in off-field incidents which might risk the loss of playing time due to disciplinary action. And yes, I'm old and out of touch with reality.

Actually, chasing big and fast high school kids around is a very, very key component in securing and keeping one of the highest paying jobs in the US of A...

UGA would have a horrible team. Georgia Southern would beat the shite out of us.

The people whose job it is to make sure UGA has a good football team desperately want Roquan Smith. Why on Earth would UGA not want the best football players they could possibly get?

ETA: It's the coaches' job to make the best players want UGA, not to sign players that already do.

ETA2: Roquan Smith is by all accounts a very good kid. Very confused, but well-behaved, reserved, and respectful. Implying that he would just come to UGA and cause trouble is absurdly unfair.
