By multiple mock drafts. Anyway kirby can persuade him to return his senior season. He stands out among a group that's likely one of the 3 best defenses in the country.

Top 15 draft grade, he would be an idiot to stay.

Defensive depth will be an issue next season. Lots of talent waiting but man we lose some serious junkyard dawgs.

This is what happened to Grantham in 2013.

8/11 starters left after 2012.

Defense had some rebuilding, some blown coverages, struggles, freshmen starting, the whole "third and Grantham" was coined.

How will Smart keep that from happening next year?

We have a lot more underclassmen playing a lot than we did in 2012.

Should have most of the DL, Patrick, Young, Rice, Grant, Walker, McGhee, Baker, Reed back. LeCounte, Speed, Herring, Gibbs have also played a good bit.

ETA: 2012 defense had very little playable depth.

I think our 1 deep will be ok but no way we will be able to rotate and replace like we are now

Idk. Guys like McBride, Bishop, Beal, and Jaden Hunter could be a lot more ready for prime time. Them and freshmen.

For sure will be a greener unit, but recruiting has picked up to the point where we should be able to reload pretty well.

Smart has gone on record that I'd a player grades as first round he fully supports then leaving. There's next to no chance Roquan returns next year. Trent on the other hand may not grade out after the injury and limited time this year.

He'd have to have a really strong finish to be a sure first rounder, IMO.

We have recruited much better than we did around that period. Instead of recruiting for the immediate need, we're recruiting and have a plan in place a year or two in advance. For example, instead of signing 6 DBs in this upcoming class, we signed them last class. Now, LeCounte and Gibbs are getting a lot of meaningful minutes and guys like Bishop, Speed, Stokes, and Poole will already know the defense. (I also forgot to add Baker and McGhee to the list of returning starters)

We're not at Bama's level of being able to plug and play without worry of graduation on defense, but our recruiting has us pointed in that direction. I'm not worried about a another Grantham-esque collapse.

Probable starting D next year:
DT-Rochester
NG-Hawkins-Muckle
DE-Ledbetter
OLB-Walker/Ojulari*/Anderson*
ILB-Patrick
ILB-Taylor or Rice
OLB-Grant
CB-Baker
CB-McGhee
STAR-Gibbs
Safety-LeCounte
Safety- Reed

Sure, some freshmen will get PT but I really only see one position (Carter's old spot) where a freshman might grab a starting spot, and a lot of that is due to the fact that we're (potentially) bringing in two of the best edge rushers in the nation. I don't think our Defense will be a top 5 defense next year but we could very well still have a top 15-20 D.

Clark will start. Will be our best player on defense imo.

Clark has a ton of raw talent but still plays a bit out of control too much. If he can improve that and play more disciplined, then the sky is the limit with him.

I don't know man. He does get a little out of control, but he's our most disruptive DL this year with the exception of Thompson.

Secondary and D-Line will still be nasty, just a drop off at most of the linebacker spots. Even then, young guys like Grant and Rice are shaping up to be very good players, and freshmen like Ojulari and Anderson are potential stars.

We literally.... literally.... had this exact conversation in the 2012-13 offseason.

"Sure we will take a small step back, but Grantham has been recruiting alot more depth than Martinez, we will plug and play... list name list name list name, rah rah rah"

I know I sound like a downer... but it's still fresh in my mind.
