Just a point of clarification: the traveling I did was independent of my musical endeavors. I don't want anyone getting the idea that I was that cool.

And probably the hottest girl I dated in Athens was a non-student local who worked with me at Best Buy. She was 19. I know it's purely anecdotal, but still.

And for DD's amusement, I'm a Grady drop out. I worked in journalism for three years after I dropped out, including a gig as a music writer in Atlanta (which paid peanuts, but got me into a lot of free shows).

If you're serious about the sports writing gig, bust your arse in school, apply for every related internship you can find, network, write for the R&B OR find some like-minded guys and start your own website/YouTube channel and start making your own shite. The main idea here is do shite to set yourself apart from every other guy who dreams of being the next Dan Patrick or Stewart Scott or Scott van Pelt or whoever. Understand that the degree and the BS journalism classes don't mean dick.

Did you have any of those Hunter S Thompson wannabes in your classes with you at Grady??

I knew one of those through a friend of a friend when I was in school. He even wore the acapulco shirts and the white low-top converse all-stars.....

Last. I heard, he was tending bar in atlanta, but that his wife had a pretty good job.

He'll have no college degree and no worthwhile work experience. Sounds like a terrible plan.

I think the best thing about UGA is that not too many poor people go there and by associating with other rich kids I was able to learn to associate with kids who were themselves going to grow up to be rich Doctors, Lawyers, and Business owners. It is how the wealthy perpetuate the wealth of the family and their like...

Nearly every male journalism student since about 1980 has been a HST wannabe at some point or another.

But, yes, I knew several.

I met HST at a bar outside Aspen in 1998. He told me to frick off.
