What does everyone consider north or south Georgia? Where do you imagine the boundaries?

I spent a lot of time in the mtns....so North Ga to me is North of Athens...Cartersville...etc. IE mountains and foothills. From Macon to there is central GA and south of Macon and below is South GA.

I know it'll piss a bunch of folks off...but IMO once you cross the gnat line its time to roll up the windows and pump the AC until you see the ocean.

I think you got it backwards, 706 & 912, I think. 404 was added for the perimeter only in it's inception, i think?

You're right, it was 404.

Nope... 404 was 1st then 706 was added for OTP minus Cobb, Douglas & a few other counties, then 770 was added when all OTP were knocked off 404...

quote:

404 was one of the original area codes established in 1947, and originally covered the entire state of Georgia. On July 1, 1954, area code 912 was assigned to southern and central Georgia. Area code 404 was retained for the northern half of the state, from the Tennessee and North Carolina borders as far south as Columbus and Augusta.

On May 3, 1992, area code 706 was created for most of the state north and east of metro Atlanta.

I remember when only two existed. If a man gave my granddaddy a number to contact that wasn't 912 , he'd assume the caller was a yankee.

I remember when you made a local call on what is now called a "land line", you just dialed the seven digits.

But, if you did that in atlanta, you got a busy signal.......until someone told you that you had to dial the area code there to make local calls. Very confusing.

Now you just tap a button.

I can also remember picking up to rotary dial out and listening to the neighbors conversation.
