I just drove through that area last week, actually. I wouldn't want to walk through any part of downtown Atlanta by myself, which for me, is the litmus test for personal safety.

Edit

I just tried to run a crime map of the activity in that exact area from the last three months. I got this message:

Whatever middle school or possibly elementary school in that neighborhood that is now closed down had millions and millions poured into it, typical atlanta throw money at it solution. It was totally shut down because they couldnt even keep it staffed.

Its like the ghettos of 1978 Johannesberg South Africa.

What area? The Centennial Park/Aquarium area?
Drove through?

WTF would there by 3 major tourist attractions,a convention ctr,
Philipps,Hotels, high end condo's in the area if it so dangerous?
And keep building in the area if it wasn't safe?

When was the last time a tourist to WOC or the Aquarium
was mugged or robbed. How bout someone going to the SECCG
or Kickoff Classic? The area is probably the heaviest patrolled
place in the state. Hell, they lock yer arse up for panhandling
around there.

I'm well aware of the bluffs and the other side of N'Side Drive south and east of the area and unless you take a wrong turn or are looking for something you shouldn't have to worry bout those freaks.

Well, if you don't count College Park and East Point, it does probably nudge out other cities like Compton and Chicago.

Honestly, that area is perfectly safe, just don't go very far out of it IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION. Or too far West either.

Five points is great while the sun is out, but the bloodsuckers come out when the sun goes down. Just like actual vampires.

While deep is definitely overblowing things, are you stupid? The build where the cheap land is and can you guess why that land was so cheap?

Seriously, do you really think putting it in a more dangerous area would stop Kasim Reed if it meant another dollar in his pocket? Especially when the only people that are really in any more danger are white? Hell, that is going to make him more likely to put it in the "more dangerous" area. Add the fact that the land was probably bought from one of his good friends and the project contracted out to another buddy and maybe you'll start to realize that the people in charge of this city don't give a shite about our safety. They only care about our money. Milton County, FTW.

It is perfectly safe in those areas in a right around the park, but if you're like the OP and aren't prepared to beat a ******* arse when accosted, then stay in the bubble.

This is getting out of hand. I have spent at least 5 days per week in that area and the surrounding areas for a long time now. Not once have I ever felt in danger or seen anything that would make me cautious. Downtown for the most part is perfectly fine. Like Deep said, west of the Dome is seriously messed up, but there's a GIANT DOME there that marks the place you shouldn't walk past.

Are you freakin kidding me? Why don't you see how "cheap"the land is around midtown and west midtown and get back to me. There's several locations around the city with FAR "cheaper" land.

So this is all about putting money Kasim Reed's pocket? Huh? It's all about driving business for the area and it's FAR better for business if the area is safe.

Aren't you the idiot who compared Atlanta to Detroit? Really? And you called me stupid?

What? There is a difference in being prepared to beat a "*******" arse when accosted and not wanting to put my family in that position. Not sure what you are saying, but I have a 3 and a 5 year old and a pretty wife and I would rather not have them in a situation as you describe.

They're exactly why you were advised not to go to the dangerous areas. You may be able to protect yourself fine, but if something did actually happen, it's unlikely you could protect everyone. I wouldn't take them into the areas mentioned, either.

Where you'll be, you'd need to go a pretty good way to get into any area that you should be concerned with. Stay north of Dekalb Ave unless you're going to the zoo and east of the Dome, west of Moreland. You won't have a problem unless you go looking for it. Atlanta isn't a very dangerous city in the area you'll be in.

Indeed. Those areas are in the bubble I was talking about. They're perfectly safe, it is outside that that it could become an issue.

Also, I lived off Boulevard and Moreland for a few years myself, I know the bad areas of Atlanta. I myself have rarely felt threatened or like I was in real trouble, but that doesn't mean that other people won't feel like they are in danger in the same area.

Yeah, but they weren't going to build that stuff in Bankhead, ever. Where they built had some key factors; still close to the city center, was cheaper than other land close to the city center, and it was probably owned by someone throwing kickbacks to Reed and his cronies.

You misunderstand, I wasn't attacking your post for saying the area was safe; it is. I was attacking the reasoning behind why you said it was safe. Reed doesn't give a crap about your well-being, they want the area "safe" because crime drives off business. They don't worry about someone getting robbed, raped, maimed or killed. They just worry about it the bad press that it would bring.

No, I'm the one that asserted that, sans East Point and College Park, Atlanta is a good bit safer than Compton and Chicago. Do you disagree?

quote:

And you called me stupid?

No. I asked you if you were.

That's because the area is perfectly safe. Anyone that says otherwise hasn't spent time there.

Boulevard and Moreland aren't downtown. I've lived near both of those as well (Ponce and Boulevard in Midtown and Moreland in EAV). Stop being a dumb white dude or stop trolling, whichever one you're doing.

I was right there yesterday had lunch on top of the Peachtree Plaza (which was good and you can't beat the revolving scenery).

Restaurant validates your in the hotel valet parking which makes up for the bottle water charge.
