Actually, considering the lack of talent at key positions, I would say that Coach Richt did let it happen.
He still won 10 games, though...almost every year. Either he had talent, or he was a heck of a coach, right?
Absolutely but he didn't win 10 games every season and didn't have a high level of talent at key positions every season. This is definitely one of the off-seasons in which he didn't leave a high level of talent. I would add that CMR was great at recruiting in the skill positions; not so much in the trenches and at DB.

Did Kirby go to church yesterday?

Just so that there isn't any confusion. This isn't an anti-Richt post, and I'm not taking anything away from his early run of fantastic success. He deserves a ton of credit for what Georgia accomplished during the early 2000's.
Let's not pretend that this is apples to apples though. How many NFL players do you see on this year's Georgia team, specifically those at the junior and senior levels? Chubb is obviously a first round talent, but who else? Michel and Sanders both have a shot at being early round picks, but I'm struggling to think of anyone else who may qualify. Maybe Smith? I'm sure Mckenzie will be drafted, but he drops too many passes to be a very high pick.
Lets compare that with what Richt had in his first season 8-4). Richt's 8-4 team in 2001 team had 8 upper classmen who were drafted to the NFL the next year. His 2002 team that went 13-1 (and consequently were also there for the first 8-4 season the year prior) had 4 NFL draftees in the first 2 rounds of the following year with 7 overall.
The point here isn't to criticize Richt or tell you that Kirby will be the greatest ever. I'm just saying that it's too early to pile onto Smart, and comparing the relative success that one coach had in 2001 to what is happening at Georgia in 2016 just isn't valid. The biggest leaps in a program tend to be in a coach's 2nd year, and so we can better answer your question "can kirby do that" in 2017.

Wynn,Pyke,Bellamy,Carter and probably Blaze but I agree with about the talent on 2001 vs this roster.

Good call on Pyke. I didn't think about him.
I think that Wynn could go either way at this point. I think he was better against Ole Miss, but against NC and Nicholls St it seemed like he was getting called for holding or watching the back of d-lineman's jerseys as they rush by him to the backfield every other play. But he could be suffering from an overall lack of offensive line play too making his individual performances take a hit.
I wish I had your confidence in Carter. I know what he was supposed to be, but I would be surprised if he has more than 5 sacks in his entire collegiate career and we are 4 games into his Junior season (just checked and according to ESPN he has 4.5, all in his freshmen season)

Carter is a mystery but I'm pretty sure he gets drafted on his tangibles
alone.Height, speed and athleticism are all there.
Look at Floyd last year,he was pretty much a non factor
4.5 sacks and very few tackles for losses. I was still very suprised he
was taken in the top 10 but he did put up big time combine numbers.

Yeah Floyd wasn't a dominant force in his final season, but he did show something. He also was pretty impressive in both his fresh and sophomore years whereas Carter completely disappeared in his 2nd. He still has time to turn things around though. We definitely need him to step up this year.
But you're right. A strong combine showing can do wonders with his measurables considering he has shown what he can do in at least one season.

I am wondering if it has more to do with the way he is being used? I'm not sure...just wondering.

This sort of public identifying of poor performance, wrapped in encouragement is new. I like it:
quote:
“We’re going to have to have guys step up and demand that players do it right and that every player buys in and practices right without ever pointing a finger,” he said. “The one thing I won’t stand for is somebody to point a finger at somebody else. ‘It was this guy’s fault, that guy’s fault.’ It all falls on all of us. It starts right here with me.”
“Because I’ve seen them do it,” Smart said when asked why he has confident his UGA can turn the page and respond against Tennessee. “I’ve seen Jayson Stanley make that catch. I’ve seen Isaiah McKenzie make that catch. I’ve seen Malkom Parrish make those plays. He made one against a 6’5? guy against North Carolina. I’ve seen them do it. We’ve just got to do it when we need to do it. We didn’t do it today. Like I said, it’s not all on them. We’ve got to do a better job as coaches to help them… “

Agree. This is how you admit shortcomings while motivating your players to bounce back from a loss.

Smart is doing a lot of things right, imo. I am not averse to criticizing him, but he should also get his just due. I think criticism is due for the Nicholls and Ole Miss performances, but he has done a ton of things right. THOSE should be pointed out and lauded, too.

So you were obviously asleep in '12 when SCe took a 35-0 lead and called off the dogs at the start of the 4th qtr & we scored a trash TD with 4 min. left against one of CMR's best teams ever(remember 5 seconds from the BCSC game?)...
I hope I don't have to remind you of all the NFL/SEC talent on that team...
Murray, Gurley, Marshall, Brown, Bennett, Andrews, Gates, Conley, Geathers, JHC, John & Jordan Jenkins, Hicks, Abry Jarvis Jones, T. King, Lynch, Mitchell, the Ogletrees, Rambo, Rome, B Smith, G. Smith, Theus, Shawn Williams, Ramik... etc... etc... If you think this team is more talented than that one or that the SCe team that boatraced us is better than this OM team we lost to I don't know what to say...
shite sometimes happens...
I don't know yet if CKS will be the answer but this thread is all kinds of fricked up...
Nope CMR never let it happen... For fricks sake...

Speaking of Bennett... what happened to our pipeline of stud, whiteboy WRs? His and Kris Durham's wallets are the ones with "Bad Motherfricker" on them.

Sort of like unicorns - there's not an unlimited supply of them.

Never seen such pussy whining in my life, gotdamn, it's his fourth game against a prolly a top 10 team that was wounded & backed into a corner with blood on their mind with a shite OL, a true FR QB, an obviously hobbled Chubb(if you've watched the last 2 games), no WR's over 5'11" that can catch a perfectly thrown pass & either a ginger 150lb FG kicker or one who's vision is so fricked up he has to wear goggles...
And that's just on the offense... gotdamn...

Look... I might well be ready to run the motherfricker outta town by the nerds game, but anyone who didn't see that arse whipping coming wasn't paying attention. That was set up to be the perfect storm of "we be fricked in this game" for UGA...
