Auburn already has opened a new $54 million housing complex for it's "student" athletes.Technically the NCAA did away athletic dormitories BUT if 50% of the occupants are non athletes you can get around those rules. Any "student" who wants to live there must get approval from the athletic dept.

Kentucky,Ohio State and Oklahoma have all opened new housing for their athletes.

Wonder how long it'll take McGarity to get with the program.

Isn't east campus village still pretty nice? It was when I was there (graduated 2011) but that may have been because every other dorm was archaic

I don't think this is a new thing. Back in the old days all the football players stayed in mcwhorter I believe. Then in the early 2000s we opened ECV which at the time was one of the nicest around, which is where most if not all the athletes stayed.

Auburn's just looks like they're about 10 years behind UGA and ECV. Literally nothing about it looks any different than ECV. I'd say we're fine with what we've got.

Yes,it is. Like I stated previously the NCAA outlawed the so call "jock dorms" a while back in order for student athletes to have a normal college experience and to eliminate some recruiting advantages.

Mcwhorter was a dump and I'd say a very few non-freshman athletes live in college housing @ UGA.

It'll will be just the opposite at these schools that have opened these new places...some have movie theatres, room service(UK) and 3 and 4 bedroom suites, etc

It will definitly give these schools and edge in recruiting.

1. ECV has 3 and 4 bedroom suites

2. If they offer room service in those dorms, they have to offer it in every dorm to every student. Good for the school if they're willing to offer it to all students paying to live in student housing. Also, room service for athletes is an awful idea. Actually wouldn't be surprised if it's forbidden by the coaching staffs due to it being a threat to nutritional monitoring.

3. The movie theater sounds nice but really isn't. It's not like a fully functioning multiplex; more like a theater room where they'll play a movie some times. UGA has that in Tate, not to mention that student athletes don't come close to having the time to sit around in a single theater room and watch whatever happens to be playing.

So why don't more of our athletes live on campus if ECV is all that?I just listed a few of the amenities that these higher end dorms provide and from the quotes I've seen and heard from athletes attending these schools, just about all of them plan on living in these new facilities.

They prolly will now that the COA money is coming on line...

What a lot have done to get spending money in the past is take the $500-$600/month off campus housing allowance & 4-5 guys rent a $1000-$1200/mth all utilities included house/condo/apt to get $200-$300 a month in spending money...

Compared to the rest of the dorms at the time, McWhorter was not too bad. A lot of guys had their own room and you had a full bathroom and shower connected to your room that you shared with only one other room. The rooms were small, but bigger and newer than Russel or Creswell.

We had our own dining hall, but it was worse than the regular dining halls. The food was horrible. I was actually host to a recruit who became one of our legendary players, but I shite you not, we went to the dining hall that night and they served corn dogs... And they were horrible. Corn dogs with a dining hall full of parents and recruits ready to sample the legendary "training table"... Thankfully, there was Oddessey and Herbies and ADPi's that night.
The reason most people moved out was the food and Coach T patrolling keeping an ever watchful eye out for girls and beer.

... McWhorter always reminded me of a old Howard Johnsons Motel...

We used to tailgate across the street on D.W. Brooks Drive at the Vet sciences building parking lot & catch the shuttle to the game that ran from Stegeman. Busses only ran pre-game, hella walk back post-game...

All UGA athletes live on campus at least their freshmen years. Almost all stay their sophomore years. Many stay their Junior years, but usually starting Junior year they move into apartments off campus with each other. With all those amenities comes a lot of monitoring. Ask anyone college student on any campus if they'd take all those amenities but be subject to constant supervision by RAs and most would bail on it after a couple of years. I know I would.

Yes,I realize all Freshman are required to live on campus but most athletes I knew (FB,BBC and Baseball)couldn't wait to get off campus after their Freshman year if for no other reason than to get stipend funds.

Where exactly are you getting your information about Sophomores and Juniors?

I would think many would enhance their off campus housing situation with COA funds.

Anyway,I have no doubt our friends to the west will use their nwe facility as a recruiting enhancement along with their bullshite COA payment they figured out.

Just an observation based on my time around the athletes. Most seemed to wind up staying at ECV because it was cheap and convenient, but a fair amount do move out around their Junior year for the stipend checks and freedom.

Good thing about the Mac was everyone could walk to practice other than the swim team.

I've got a few stories about the Mac that I'm sworn to keep secret until the relevant parties have departed this mortal coil.

I believe there was an audible sigh of relief that emanated from across the state when they tore that place down and buried all the figurative skeletons under the parking lots that now sit there.
