These guys are better than any junkyard defenses.

So nice to have an alum as coach. Wont leave you high and dry for more dough and knows the program history for more than past 10 years.

If you notice in his press conferences he always says "before UGA" or "in my past coaching experiences".

He doesn't say Bama and refuses to compare us as such because we are GEORGIA.

He wants us to have our own brand

That was my first thought when reading the OP. This is more than just a good job for CKS. It's personal and that comparison is a big honor and doesn't come lightly. CER would have been a hell of a head coach at UGA.

Yeah... it's not 100% of the time, but it certainly seems at least by the midway point of last year that became a very concerted effort on his part. "Other places I've coached" is another favorite phrase of his... If a reporter outright then mentions Bama, he'll continue there, but he's definitely trying to distinguish his coaching brand... it's not entirely selfless... as I believe he did it initially to quiet the "Kirby was Saban's yes man" dialogue, though that seems to be behind him now mostly at this point.

80-81 defense (and special teams for that matter) was very very good, and IMO has often been overlooked because of Herschel's dominance on the other side of the ball.

In context of time they were great, but the D lineman on this team were likely faster than the LBs and and the LBs on this team were faster than any of the skill players...

Oh absolutely I agree ....didn't realize you meant it from that angle. I was going on results vs results more so than athlete vs athlete.

They were very good statistically mainly because HW kept them off the field.

Thought the '83 defense was better than those 2...maybe not statically but certainly had as much talent and carried the team along with Butler.Didn't get much rest
from the offense.

Dunno who reads GTP, but good discussion on that led to this video getting re-shared... had been a minute:
Dooley's Junkyard Dawgs - James Brown

Would like to see an updated version of this... (recommendation was made of Luda - to which the obligatory condom budget question was asked ) ... Even if we can't get an actual musician to update, wish I had the time to splice together some similar footage and maybe edit in "Kirby" in place of "Dooley".

I remember the 80 defense as being pretty damn good. Saved the Tn game recovering a fumble at the 2. Caused George Rogers to fumble as SC was driving. Beat Clemson when the offense couldn't move much. Points allowed 15,0,16,3,21,0,0,10,21,21,20,10. Not to shabby in my opinion.
