How bout a weekly recruiting round up sticky? So we don't have to read a 700 page thread?

You're going in the wrong direction.

We need less stickies. It's a health issue now.

Side-note: This thread is now as long as the artery-clogging Falcons stickied thread.

Cracker,

I'm not sure this place is safe for you right now.

If you start to feel any tightness in your chest or tingling in your left arm or in your extremities..........just click over to the LSU board. IMMEDIATELY.

They only have one stickied thread over there, and I think this will immediately lower your blood pressure.

Exactly.

I go there to clear my mind sometimes.

It's like these stickied stale threads here are starting to turn. And they're rancid and festering.

Then, you go to the LSU board, and there's a fresh cool mountain breeze blowing through.

Somebody's going to get malaria here.

Just kidding, I think it could definitely be argued whether it is a sport or not.

They have 3 threads stickied now on the SECR now, 1 about team previews & 2 for the 1st 2 teams previewed. I guess they'll wind up with 15 soon if they stick every team's preview...

It is, IMO. Honestly, I think my personal definition of a sport is the best one I've seen. An event (and please, dont' try to bring board games and other nonsense into it, we're talking about things that are actually worthy of being debated sport/non-sport) where the competition is directly trying to impede your success. In NASCAR, other drivers (whether it's supposed to happen or not) can bump you, spin you out, etc. They are trying to not let you win. Sport.

Football, baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer, etc are all examples where your opponent has a direct affect on you winning or not.

Golf, cheerleading, bowling, gymnastics, etc do not. You do the very best you can, your opponent does the best they can, and at the end you see who did better. I dont' consider those sports. And please note it has NOTHING to do with difficulty level. I know gymnastics is hard as shite. I love golf and play when I can. It's not being derogatory.

Like I said, it has nothing at all to do with difficulty. I know they are all very hard to excel at. I'm just saying..nobody is stopping you. The only thing in your way of winning those is yourself. To me a sport has an element of your opponent actively trying to stop you from winning. Those things you listed don't.

Like I said with NASCAR other people CAN directly influence whether you win or not. They can get in front of you to prevent you passing, or they can spin you out of the race entirely.

gymnastics- you do the best you can, someone else does their best, then you compare scores.

track- each person is in their own lane. Do your best.

swimming- see track.

Nobody in those 3 is actively stopping you from winning.

I don't know what the best definition of a sport it (although WG's does look pretty solid), but my biggest pet peeve with this argument is when people make the "BUT IT'S HARD!!!!" point.

If we're going to decide that an activity being difficult makes it a sport then how about calculus, roofing a house, dismantling a bomb, etc.

so then only sprints are competitions, but long distance is a sport? ie, just like NASCAR, you block lanes, you give a nudge here and there....

How about the events longer than 400 meters where you are no longer in an assigned lane? At that point it starts to (very loosely) resemble some of sporting qualities of nascar.

Are you allowed to trip the other competitors?

No, but you can impede them in certain ways. I don't really have any axe to grind on this one, just throwing it out there as a former 800 meter runner. It would get very strategic and somewhat physical between runners getting boxed in, swinging out wide, etc.
