From what he's told us he's a smart, dedicated individual. He doesn't need community college.

You suggested him taking online classes. Unless you're talking about him taking online classes at UGA, which would be retarded, then he would be taking them at a community college.

Look guy,

Just because it presents a paradox in your mind does not mean it went over his head.

Settle down now and quit eating all the canyons, the short bus will be here for you at any moment.

Put your hockey helmet on SPED9...

Honestly I'm pretty undecided on what I really want to do but I think I want to do something in medicine, it could pharmacy or anesthesiology but I don't know yet.

Virtually every pharmacy graduate has several offers waiting for them. Same with anesthesiology. My fishing buddy here is an anesthesiologist and loves his work and makes about as much as the doctors he works with.
If you're comfortable with a large student body where you are surrounded by people then UGa is the place. If you are more comfortable in smaller groups of people then Mercer may be better. But be aware that Mercer students typicaly are liberals in political and social philosophy, so if you are more conservative you may feel isolated socially.

Mercer is an expensive private school but if you are interested in one of their professional programs: Law, Engineering, Medicine or Pharmacy, then it's a good choice and probably worth the cost. However, UGA has very good Business, Law and Pharmacy schools so unless you want to get into Engineering our Medical school at Mercer, I would recommend UGA instead. UGA is a lot less expensive regardless.

This just gave me images of the South Park Episode "Up the down steroid"

and fwiw I thought your advice was very legitimate.

Hypothetically,
If I were the OP, knowing what I know now I'd go to Georgia Baptist College, Mercer's nursing school for 4 years. (Pharmacy is a great career choice also) Put 2 years of ICU work in, apply to CRNA school, do 2.3 - 2.6 years for my Masters or 3 - 3.3 for my doctorate. (don't do like me, going back to get your DNAP adds on another couple years if you don't do it from the get go) Get out make about 140-170k to start if he works a rural hospital. (By the way, move back home if possible, live with your folks, and the first 2 years, do nothing but pay off loans and save) Get 3 years of experience and join an anesthesia team or a Surgery Center/Plastic Surgery/Dentistry(specifically children's) and consult for about 250K+ and work about 2/3 of the year and call it a day...that's just me though...

Having said that, I have a couple degrees from UGA and that's a pretty damn good school also...

Don't be a pharmacist... trust me on this.

Pharmacists have jobs because of laws about drugs, those laws are changing soon. I'm not talking about Marijuana either.

Oncology is where the money is, but also very depressing. You couldn't pay me a million dollars a year to be an oncologist. 2 million, maybe, I'd do it a couple years and be done.

By the time you've graduated med school and done your residency, no one is going to give a shite where you did your undergrad.

As far as you being a responsible young 17 year old that doesn't intend on getting into trouble, you wouldn't be the first well-raised strapping young man to get dropped off in Athens with high hopes and wide eyes, and end up getting AIDS from the door handle at Boneshakers, because you didn't know...

In ten years there are going to be 20/20 and 60 Minutes episodes about the collapse of the pharmacy business, and all these previously successful bright people that can no longer make a living, despite being doctors.

Yeah I was pre-pharm for a few years but every time I shadowed I was counting down the minute until it was done. It seemed so boring.

Good way to be overqualified for a mindless job that makes you six figures at 24 though.

High 5 figures out of school, actually. And you won't be 24, probably 26, not that it matters.

Pharmacists as we know them won't exist in ten years.

What's your outlook on anesthetists...I'd like to know what my future is going to look like...Should I update my IT Engineering resume?

Pharmacist average between 90k and 120k out of school.. these numbers are fairly easy to identify with a search and tend to parallel what my friends who are PharmD's made starting out ....some moonlight on weekends at private companies and make more.

They seem to really enjoy their jobs....not enough of an adrenaline rush for me and I can see how it might be a bit boring as I would imagine it lacks the dynamic complexity I've grown accustomed to.

I have a feeling if you went through the trials and tribulations to become an Oncologist, you'd work for more than 2 years....imagine being a nurse or a doctor in a pediatric Burn unit....I can handle a lot of things, but kicking puppies and severely burned children aren't one of them...

You can do 2 years of undergrad and enter the pharm program at 20 making you 24 when you graduate. Not that's it's common but I definitely had friends at UGA do it.

And anesthesiologist is a tough thing to obtain...you need to get into med school and I'm pretty sure be at the top of your med class since it's one of the most desired residencies. I'm in dental school and the people who want to specialize in ortho or OMFS study 8 hours a day on top of class.

Yeah Man, I live in Warner Robins and Macon is rough place to live.
Been to Athens many many times, much nicer environment and all around better place.
But if your not ready to party 8 days a week, then Athens might not be the place for you. Macon at least is slow a few nights a week.

i honestly just cannot even fathom how this is a tough decision. im in my last month as a student at uga and this question is actually pissing me off at the thought of someone passing up 4 years of uga and athens. i cannot think of a single scenario that would have you regret going to uga.

academically, uga is good enough for literally anything you want to do as long as you excel at it. undergrad doesn't really matter anyways if you are going med school or grad school routes.

ETA: this is obviously blind homerism that really doesn't help, but whatever.

It's true Mercer is known for medicine, but that's because of their med school, not their under grad pre-requisites. I'm not saying they don't have a decent Science-based undergrad program, but I've never once heard someone say "definitely go to Mercer for their pre-med program." Also, while your aspirations are extremely admirable, you may start into pre-med courses, and decide it isn't for you. If that's the case, you're better off at UGA where you have more options if you want to switch. Also, if you ever move out of state and hunt for a job, there's a pretty good chance whoever is reading your resume has never even heard of Mercer. That's not to say UGA has the name recognition of Yale, or that Mercer people can't find jobs outside of GA, but sometimes stupid things like that make a difference.
