Did he know this was going to happen to CBB? So he stayed out of the AAU scene, biding his time, knowing that the College Baskeball board would be taken out in scorched earth fashion when he had a fireproof suit? And now he will win us a natty by default?

I feel woefully confident that we are nowhere near this

ETA: also confident that we will still find a way to miss the tourney even if this whole thing short dicks half of our schedule

I thought the same thing! This is how Mark Fox sleeps at night while we all scream for better results.

When things like this happen and you realize that almost the whole system is corrupt, it feels pretty good to have confidence in your organization that you do it the right way.

Obviously, there is a chance we could be involved, but given the mediocre/ borderline team results and the knowledgable insiders who have repeatedly said CMF doesn't play this game....it feels good to be out of the firing line..(for now)

I am sure Bama and the SEC office will be gunning for UGA FB soon enough if Kirby continues to build and grow...but at least it wont be the FBI and the "real" SEC!

I like to think CMF and UGA MBB is squeaky clean....

Wasn't exactly the case with Hugh Durham

take place when they were in charge

Nah there is no chance we are involved, and it does feel good. I love this program and I may be the only one to feel that way, but I don't care.

Same thing popped into my head too. I think Fox is a good coach and this could actually pay some nice dividends for the dawgs. New Steg upgrades look really nice too.

Wasn't the talk when Yasir Rosemond was hired that he was pretty connected with Nike guys? I know he's gone now, but UGA may want to make sure its arse is covered in that regard.

I doubt that but he could inadvertently reap recruiting benefits due to specific recruits steering clear of the programs under investigation.

Yasir did not have nearly the impact in recruiting that many thought he would have. Perhaps because Fox steered away from paying players through outside connections.

There is a reason why we were close with several big targets and just missing on them.

I wish this thread was more well attended.
It could be a good one!

Though I guess no one wants to reverse course on CMF and actually retract the "we should be doing anything and everything (cheating) to get 4 and 5 star ATL AAU recruits" - I am truly giddy that we aren't (apparently) involved....it is a nice feeling to have!

From personal experience, I can attest that the recruiting game is VERY "fuzzy" - even for the most upright and "clean" schools.

As a HS BB player, ATL AAU guy in the early 90's - I got a partial BB scholarship to a very prestigious southern university just because of my friendship and affiliation with a BIG TIME 5* prospect (I didn't know that was the "play" at the time - I was 17, I thought I earned it). I received lots of things I shouldn't have (no actual cash) and I wasn't a major influencer in Mr. 5* decisions.

As I was a year ahead of 5* guy, when I was in my FR year of college, MY mother got DAILY calls from my coaches to talk about Mr. 5* - she was asked to do all sorts of odd and illegal recruiting things, which she mostly "bless your hearted" her way out of....I told her it would all go away as soon...apparently, the coaches weren't allowed to talk to me about it...it did go away soon....along with my perks....

Mr. 5* and family was "uncorruptable" and I still love them for it. I "lost" my partial scholarship and practice squad spot at the end of the year after he signed elsewhere.....

That is just a tiny peek into a minor event in early 90's ATL BB stories. I am sure the shoe companies, agents, social media, camps, colleges and coaches have made it FAR FAR worse today!

Heads are going to roll over this, but I think the FBI & SEC (Sec Exch Com) is after the Corporations, Shoe Comapanies, and Agents. They just have to work from the bottom up by turning up the heat on the guys that don't have $500/ hr legal teams, etc.

These are not "victimless" crimes. This stuff is blackmail, extortion, fraud, bribery, tax fraud, money laundering, racketeering, gambling, point shaving, etc.
In a social sense it is the worst kind of moral breakdown...It is big business extorting people and families who need every extra advantage they can get in the disguise of "amatuer" athletics. (trickling down through lots of middle men of course)

The CBB system may not crumble entirely, but this is going to be quite interesting and it will DEFINITELY put "one and done" on life support!!

The more sports became a business, the more this sort of thing became inevitable.

Nope.
He was on the ATL AAU circuit around that time. That guy was pure class. Another great dude who was probably also "uncorruptable" if you will. Though, he did play for Pitino...

I remember seeing his HS team play Griffin HS and Darren Hancock one year in a region tournament. Maybe 1989 or 90?

If we have been paying people with our piss poor recruiting and Fox so anti-AAU I will be completely shocked (and pissed).

Don't know if anyone caught this post on the GBB but almost had me spit my drink when I read the headline...

Mark Fox has his core competencies and weaknesses, but what if he has been in the wrong role the entire time?
