Bill Bates: We started blitzing, because we didn’t think (Walker) would be able to pick them up. We had a blitz from one of the sides. He cut back to the left, and our coaches always told us to break down for a tackle. So I broke down.
I looked into Herschel’s eyes and realized he wasn’t going to make a move. The next thing I knew, I had footprints on my chest and turned around and saw No. 34 running into the end zone for a touchdown. It was a big deal and something I’ll always remember.

Best one-sentence summary you’ll ever read:

Donnie McMickens: That was the end of my running back career.

aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thank you thank you thank you so much. There's a little piece of UGA trivia that I had forgotten and for some reason could never remember. I knew HW was 3rd string going into the season and Carnie Norris was ahead on the depth chart. For the life of me I could never remember who else it was.

My first game trip to Neyland.Hot as hell (even though it was at night)Concessions were out of ice by halftime.

I believe it was the largest crowd ever at the time to see a CFB game in the south.

Good article. I wish I was old enough to have witnessed his times at UGA. Must have been a great time to be a Dawg fan.

Everyone remembers Herschel for his power and speed. If you watch the tape, his leaping ability was incredible. To get that big of a body that high with seemingly little effort. You don't see that anymore.

Yea and the seats were so tight you literally couldn't turn sideways. I remember sweat dripping down the back of my neck. Hottest night game I've ever been to in my life.

probably the most athletic play he ever made was against ole miss in 1981. He dove over the pile from about the 4, was hit head on by a LB, in mid-air absorbed the blow while simultaneously beginning a spin move, then landed on the ground while spinning and easily waltzed into the endzone.

It's shite like that man....people may end up eventually breaking some of HW's records, but it's stuff like that why there will truly never be another. He was the absolute pinnacle of speed, brute strength, and finesse. One of a kind.

In fact, the Bulldogs wanted him so badly that Dooley decided to add a women's track and field program a year ahead of schedule -- so they could offer a scholarship to Walker's sister, Veronica. She became the first woman to receive a scholarship in women's track at UGA in 1979.
