Stolen from SECR

Georgia must go no farther than its own backyard for the nation's top talent, has minimal in-state competition for recruits, has top-notch (and ever-improving facilities) and a proven track record of sending players to the NFL. If you can't get players here, check your pulse.

I think we all basically know this. It's the main reason why I'm not really sweating the impact of the new regime on our recruiting class. May take a hit this year, but we'll recover quickly.

Minimal in state competition is a fallacy. The adjacent states, concentration of talent near ATL airport, and transient nature of many of the residents is the issue.

The proximity of the adjacent power programs makes Athens an even harder place to recruit. We can fill 10 Division I programs' recruiting classes from Georgia HS alone.

Agreed. Tech is last on our list of worries in terms of other schools getting top players. I would argue that Georgia has more competition than anyone except maybe Florida or Texas.

And yet we are surrounded by teams who have won or played for a National Championship in the last 10 years, (Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Florida State) and have another knocking on the door. (Clemson) Guess where they all recruit? Georgia. No other state in the country have as many "poachers" as Georgia. We also have traditionally powerful Tennessee just North of us.

It's just not as easy as your article makes it seem, and if we rest on the thoughts of an opinion by a writer we will lose our strong recruiting class we have this year.

Exactly!

If you look at the surface, it seems as if UGA has it made. Dig a little deeper and a different narrative develops.

Maybe. But they wouldn't be very good.

You could easily get three very strong programs taken care of, though.

I would argue that we have more. Miami doesn't get that much talent. Florida State does, but they are not as big a factor as Alabama and Auburn is for us...and we compete head to head with Florida and Florida State, as well.

The ONLY reason Texas competes with as many is because they have been so bad lately.

Florida has way more poachers than Georgia, the Big 10 sets up down there and we take our share from there as well.

That said, we generally get more than our fair share of top recruits from in state. We lose some too but that happens. I think generally out of the top 20 recruits we get about 7 of them and the rest is dispersed to several other programs. Given our needs and things our of our control, that is a good number and Kirby can further raise it but talent as skill positions is not our problem as much as talent in the trenches is. There is only so many great huge men that can come in and compete right away.

Florida has 20 million people... Twice as much as GA. They also have a transient base which is why It is easlily poached... With that stated, the climate and allure allows them to recruit nation wide... Especially in NE in upper Midwest....

Net/net, they win

Agree but with an excellent recruiting staff our proximity should help us with some top recruits. Unfortunately West Georgia is actually closer to Auburn. Northwest GA is closer to Knoxville and South Georgia is closer to FSU and Gainesville, FL.

Yea but the big prize (metro Atlanta)is closest to Athens and it keeps producing more and more players every year unlike other parts of the state that are losing population.

I agree but they also have a big fair weather culture. Having 3 top programs in state and in our lifetimes they have all been relevant at some point so the nature of recruiting in the state is constantly swinging in favor of one team or another. Right now, FSU has the upper hand but UF is gaining ground.

Lets not forget UCF...easily capable of being a top 25 program.

Even schools like USF and Florida Atlantic can effect your depth even if they don't compete for top recruits.

Ehh, I worked with a guy who was recruited by Georgia and he didn't like it at all compared to his other visits. He said it was nothing personal, just different preferences.

I also think that the SEC West is a natural barrier to UGA getting talent from Texas. We get it, but not like some of those West schools do.

Also, with Georgia literally every SEC West and SEC East school tries to come and raid the talent and that doesn't even factor in the impacts of FSU and Clemson.

Sure, Georgia is the 3rd best talent state....but at lot of the familes of that talent aren't UGA legacies or legacies yet and that hurts us. We'll also never keep Auburn or Alabama out of the state...they are just too close and have those rings.

Would you rather not have the talent in this state?
While there is a transient nature to the kids and families in metro Atlanta, its still a HUGE advantage to have the kids in your own back yard.

Who freakin cares if all these other schools recruit this state? It happens to every state with great players.
