Starting to wonder if it may be naive wishful thinking to believe our conservative and vanilla play-calling so far is some sort of strategic chess move by Richt and Squat to keep the playbook hidden. Waiting and saving it to unleash the fury on more worthy opponents.

There was that 3rd quarter TD drive against Vandy where they snapped out of vanilla mode briefly before returning to it immediately after, but........everything I'm reading now from the coaches makes it sound like the playbook is limited because they don't feel they're ready to execute all of it. Like they are easing in to it as they grow more comfortable with it.

Not sure what to think now. What's really going on here?

If we really are holding back a lot of our plays I feel like it would've been smarter to start opening up against Vanderbilt because it would've been better to have some more in game practice with those plays instead of just one drive.

I think it's a little of both. Obviously GL is still learning the system and gaining confidence so it makes sense to limit the playbook. At the same time, there was little doubt that we would start 2-0, so why show your cards to Spurrier and co. I'm sure we're going to have a much better sense of Schotty the play caller after Saturday, for better or worse. IMO, I think they're going to see if GL can truly stretch the field- or else Spurrier will force us to do so. I'm optimistic.

And then there's this.......

quote:

And Richt said he talked to Schottenheimer about not feeling like he had to call games conservatively. “Be free to call whatever we think is good,” Richt recounted.

“Don’t feel like we have to run for X amount of yards or we have to get the ball to Chubb so many times. I’ve called plays over the years and you certainly want to use your skill players the best you can and use the talent that you have. But just feel free to attack the defense in the game the way we attacked all week in the film room. Do what we believe in. Let’s go.”

LINK....

But, I specifically remember Richt saying in the press conference after Vandy that he directly requested some of the conservative playcalling last Saturday....

I don't think there are a lot of secrets to hold close to the chest for this offense.

Yep. Richt, Schotty, and company have not reinvented the offensive football wheel so to speak. There will be some subtle differences between CMB and Schotty but UGA is still going to run a pro style scheme that relies on the run threat to set up play action.

The 3 TE formation has been only used a couple of times and the same play each time. Guaranteed we have more out of that.....

We haven't attacked With Mitchell on the island as much as we will.

We haven't had many play actions thus far.

We are running most of our plays out of the "22" set, which I believe will be changing with USC and Bama

Only 2 plays I can recall out of the twin-back shotgun formation.

Can't imagine we don't have most of the plays available in the playbook ready now. Pretty sure MM said in an interview that GL had half the playbook memorized on day 1 and it ls an extensive playbook.

We are holding secrets...Lambert is actually left handed. We are making him throw right handed to throw everyone off.

The plays are there. Obviously you are going to tweak some things when it comes to the week to week offensive game plan.

I don't think we've thrown one real bomb all season. The longest pass I can recall was the post against vandy that should have been intercepted near the goal line.

I think you are right. We always take at least on shot deep a game off play action and I can't remember us doing that.

My guess is he is limiting the low% throws until he see more of a rhythm at the QB spot.

Also, if you are winning and shite is working, no reason to run lower% plays. It's not as much about hiding the play book as it is going with what is working.

Also, we haven't run a lot of plays in the first two games and we have had leads.

We do not know if there is an issue with Squatty* not being comfortable with the playbook. Meaning, when a game is played, you have to have a pretty good idea what plays you are calling. SIince it is a new playbook to him, he may still be getting his own rhythm going. It's always easy to fall back on high % plays with our backs.

Personally don't think the approach is to be vanilla but to ease the offense into the playbook.

Agree with Peter Buck that the number of plays needed has also been a factor.

No reason to call the difficult plays if you can't execute the easy ones.

It's not like the vanilla offense has been executed to perfection so if I'm a betting man, it's the latter.

Alright, i'm not going to keep linking to the dawgnation ajc site because everybody is reading the same thing I'm reading. But, after reading that new one, I'm back to believing that Coach Squat is indeed a patient cold-blooded chess master. And fury is about to be unleashed.

Exciting times.

Yea this guy called plays in the NFL for several years. I can guarantee you that he has a few tricks up his sleeve. And I'm glad we get to unleash it on the HBC

Ramsey had the longest attempt of the year vs Vandy, and our star WR loved it.
