No hypocrisy here. Its about retaining/signing quality players, winning games, and the money that winning brings a university, which allows for infrastructure upgrades which brings in quality players....wash, rinse, repeat

Now along with this, its nice when the players actually give a damn about school and aren't just THUG POS, but perform on the field, and most is forgiven in college football these days

That is a terrible comparison. Not even remotely in the ballpark.

If we're assuming that "amateur athletics" is amateur and that the student athlete process is about academics and the development of the "STUDENT" athlete than what's exactly dangerous about a kid wanting to go to the school that's best for such development? FSU and like minded individuals are approaching this situation from a contractual stand point. You guys are cave men from an intellectual stand point. Just admit its about the money this kid will potentially make the school. If its not than let him go to to whatever college he damn well pleases. (the same freedom any other college kid enjoys). If its about the money, pay him the money he potentially brings in the university or take a hike. I could care less if he ends up at UGA but can't stand the hypocrisy of this situation.

umm, i never once said it wasn't about football. it is, and i don't care. college football is the bread winner and funds said academic pursuits, so yea, they get preference despite what your ideals may be. oh, and let's be real here, is matthew thomas really wanting to change commitment because he wants whats "best for such development" or is he trying to change which evil, money making juggernaut he plays for?

i mean two people now have said that my line of thinking is hypocritical but if yall are bored enough you can read my post history and realize that while you may think i'm cold or an arse i am consistent. houston screwed up, ncaa is being a bunch of dicks, shite happens and i have said nothing different. if anything i thought richt should have gone ahead and medical'd him earlier and drop it. and for the other guy getting huffy and puffy about our disregard for the academic side of college football, yea, that's the nature of the sport. ou can get on your soap box all ya want but that's what college football is, they don't have to play if they don't want to. but that kid signed a contract and it's better he learn now rather than later how to take personal responsibility because he isn't gonna have his hand held later in life. he has an obligation. and no, he can't just pick any college like every other kid because not every other kid has the ability to attend school for free like he has the opportunity to do IF he fulfills his end of the bargain. and if they do attend school and they sign the proper paperwork and the time comes and passes they have to attend that school or wait unti the next semester. same concept. personal responsibility. no matter what happened to this kid they signed a legal document and mismanaged the entire recruiting process where this kid had a bevy of choices and time to make a decision. he made one, one he regretted, and now he has to go through this but this is on him and his family, not FSU.

AMELIA ISLAND -- If Florida State's football coaches can't convince blue-chip linebacker Matthew Thomas to honor his Letter of Intent and enroll at FSU this fall, the former Miami-Booker T. Washington star will have to go through an NCAA appeals process to seek relief.

During a break at the ACC spring meetings here Tuesday morning, FSU athletic director Randy Spetman told the Democrat that the school was surprised by Thomas' request and has no intention of releasing him from his LOI.

Thomas, considered to be one of the nation's top two outside linebackers, told the Miami Herald that he has second thoughts and wants to enroll at Southern Cal or Georgia instead of FSU.

But Spetman said releasing a player in such a situation would strike at the heart of the Letter of Intent process.

“You’d get into a situation where if you release him, then people would be doing that every year,” Spetman said.

Spetman said he has never experienced a situation like this, where a student-athlete wanted to leave before stepping foot on campus.

"We would be more than happy to release someone if there is a compelling reason," Spetman said.

But if that's not the case -- and it doesn't appear that it is -- then, "The feeling is we wouldn't release him," Spetman said. "He can appeal to the NCAA, and they can decide if there's a compelling reason."

FSU is still hopeful that Jimbo Fisher and his coaching staff will convince Thomas to stick with the Seminoles.

And in that game Matthew Thomas will be playing for the good guys and he'll have 7 tackles, 2 sacks, FF, FR, and a fumble return for a 39 yd TD.

if his mom pressured him into any other contract it'd likely be the same situation.

Not necessarily. When this all first came out, Thomas said he signed his LOI under duress and forced by his mom. If he can prove he signed under duress, then the LOI is void, just as any contract would be.

That said, I don't believe he can prove duress here. I don't think mom really forced him at all, I think Kiffin just offered him a lot of money after NSD and he wants out to go take that.

I'm no legal expert so idk what qualifies for under duress but yea, as you said, all I've extrapolated from the situation is that Thomas was unsure, his mom pushed FSU, and boom he decides with FSU. His mom definitely pushed FSU but was he really forced to? I think you're right, they'd have an uphill battle if that's the stance they'd take.
