He won 6 SEC titles in 25 years

1966 - 5-0 - Miss St, Ole Miss, Ky, Fl, AU
1968 - 5-0-1 - TN(tie), Ole Miss, Vandy, Ky, Fl, AU
1976 - 5-1 - Al, Ole Miss(Loss), Vandy, Ky, Fl, AU
1980 - 6-0 - TN, Ole Miss, Vandy, Ky, Fl, AU
1981 - 6-0 - TN, Ole Miss, Vandy, Ky, Fl, AU
1982 - 6-0 - Miss St, Ole Miss, Vandy, Ky, Fl, AU

Never played more than 6 conference games.
Won one champ in a year he played Alabama(76)
Never played LSU in champ year

Just some perspective for debate

Why is that? They lost to MSU,ND and barely beat Rutgers.Would have been a great game.

LSU wasn't that big of a deal back then VD also beat em in 78 and 79 and all those 80's SECC teams would have beat them.

Bama woulda been a good match up to those 80 and 81 teams.82 team woulda killed them.

VD also got knocked out by AU in 77,79,71 and 83.

I get your point though.VD had far easier path than CMR does today.

I don't get it. That reads like he doesn't like the idiots that bark at newborns. At least wait until they can crawl.

Because you know UGA would have choked so hard more likely than not. We struggled enough with the bad teams that year.

No I don't "know" that.Granted, there were some close victories that year but they did what they had to do to win and got better as the year progressed.Hell, look at the '83 team, multiple close victories and ended up beating #2 Texas.

Conversely the 81 and 82 teams CRUSHED several teams during the regular season and both ended up losing their bowl games.Although I think VD and his primitive play calling cost us both.

Gotcha. I've never seen anyone do anything like that by the way. But he can feel free to join in on the Georgia bashing if he wants. Free country and all.

at least a few of Dooley's SEC titles were shared titles...and in 1976 the only teams we could beat were conference teams....

No matter how you slice it we have never been an elite program. 1980-83 is as close as we ever came record wise but elite programs are not one man shows.....

Yeah, now that I don't view Dooley with the kid glasses that grew up in the 80's worshiping him he was a good, not great coach.

I've always said that he didn't have to coach in the internet message board/ESPN era. He was on a hot seat going into '80. Look at the '79 season. Joker started 0-3 with a season opening loss to WAKE FREAKING FOREST. If Herschel doesn't show up he is toast. And we would probably view him historically as slightly better than Wally Butts. For the entire decade of the 70's he was 75-38-1 with 1 SEC championship and that 3 year period between the '76 and '80 teams he was 20-13. That's not elite.

So right now for the last decade the Richter has 1 SEC championship and is 74-40, not counting this season as it's not complete. Once again not elite.
