Clock Management

I've seen a few complain (even the announcers) about clock management at the end of the half. The announcers complained about UGA not calling a timeout, and then in the very next sentence commented that Missouri could get the ball back with time.
I don't think some realize what our end of half priorities are.
Priority 1 is to make that possession the last possession of the half. Do not leave any time left.
Priority 2 is to get into scoring range.
Priority 3 is to save timeouts for a field goal.
Priority 4 is to have the team in position to take a shot at the end zone.
That is it. I get that some want priority 4 ahead of priority 1. But we are following a winning formula. We are winning the clock management battle on the scoreboard.

We wasted a minute and a half between plays Saturday and as a result ran out of time. Our end of half clock management has been terrible.
Luckily we haven't been behind going into half time.

Had we been behind that would of been a huge issue. However for all we know CKS just didn't care.

That is, unless we’re playing Notre Dame.
I love Kirby, and I’m excited about where he’s taking the program, but we don’t have to think he does everything perfectly yet. His clock management is better than last year, but still needs work. It hasn’t really hurt us yet, and I hope it stays that way.

Only need to save one timeout for that.

Nah, save a couple and ice your own kicker, just to frick with the other team's minds.

I disagree.
We were doing the same formula. We were taking a shot for the field goal and we threw the interception (only 20 seconds left on the clock).
The formula works. Kirby hasn't been wrong on the end of half all season.

If I remember correctly, the interception was Godwin's fault (not fromm). He didn't work back to the ball (repeat of the interception that Eason threw at the end of the Tennessee game in 2016 where Godwin was just too lazy waiting on the ball to arrive in tight coverage).

You do not remember correctly. Fromm threw it to Nauta, and it was covered. Definitely his fault and one of the very few mistakes he's made all year.

Thanks for the correction.

Yes, he has. He should have called timeout after 3rd down against ND, and probably (although I get why he didn't) after 3rd down against MSU. Against Notre Dame, we would have gotten the ball back with 30 more seconds (2:10ish) and 1 less timeout. It always makes sense to call the TO there. We were actually lucky ND kicked with :15 left on the play clock.
He's been better. No mistakes like South Carolina last year, but he's not perfect. There are tons of coaches that aren't, and it's ok to say that.

Agree to disagree.
Again, the focus is to make it the last possession.
And the lack of time worked in our favor with notre dame having to work with such little time (4 snaps in 20 seconds).

No worries. We just have different priorities. I think statistically, mine is the better option, especially if you're going to try to score. Mark did the same thing against UK a few years ago. We should have gotten the ball back with 2 minutes, but lost 40 seconds by not calling a TO. We made a FG. I'd rather have that 40 seconds to try and get a touchdown (and settle for a FG if need be).
Maybe some of it is just Kirby not trusting a Freshman QB yet, especially on the road, but he did the same thing against MSU at home, so I think it's just the strategy you talked about.

It could be the freshman thing.
But I really think it goes to a few things.
1) we usually get the ball to start the half. Finishing the half with the last possession and starting the half with a possession is a win keeping points off the board.
2) that leads to fewer possessions for the opponent. More time of possession for us. Our ppg allowed will be better when we dictate possessions and time on the field for our defense.
Kirby is a defensive coach. Too many snaps with our defense on the field can take its toll and lose games late (see the Falcons in the superbowl) even when we should win.
