"Balance. He’s always been able to run the ball when he had to run the ball and he’s always been able to throw when that’s been the strength that he has. He’s multiple offense, he uses a lot of formations, he uses the tight ends well and is really a guy who uses whatever personnel he has and that intrigued me. Without going into detail, which I don’t want to do, when I met with him I felt really comfortable and had a really good feeling. I’ve had to call defenses against him and he created a lot of issues with what he does. He takes his best players and gets his best players the ball. That’s what football is to me. That’s what’s hard to defend and I’ve always thought he did a good job with that so he was the guy.”

This is why I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. KS of all people should know who out there can put a good offense on the field.

So it wasn't because the good choices all said no dice.

Sorry, the only coaches I give the benefit of the doubt to are Saban and Belichick.

Been burned too many times trusting in my coaches hires.
Gonna 2nd guess this hire til I'm proved wrong...still think its a package deal to get Pittman.

If it's a package deal, Pittman better be the Vince Lombardi of OL coaches. Hiring a garbage OC to get an OL coach you really want is an asinine decision.

i remember the shock when Mark Richt picked a journeyman nobody from Grand Valley St or something to be his DC. he used some of the same rationale to explain it. ie he had been impressed with how hard it was to play against van gorder's defenses.

everyt'ing's gonna be alright, now.

Beat me to it. Very underwhelmed with BVG- CMR used the exact same reasoning. BVG may be the best assistant to ever stalk the hedges....at least from a UGA perspective.

A good DC ought to know what a good OC looks like.

I was going to call out the same example. I'm less than blown away by the hire, but I have no problem waiting to see how it pans out. My main rationale is the same as above. Smart faced off against Chaney's offenses at Tennessee and Arkansas many times, and that's the guy he decided to hire as his own OC.

totally agree. two random facts that pretty much tell the tale on BVG

1. his defenses pretty much ALWAYS played better in the second half - a testament to his tactical prowess.

2. he saw unknown Thomas Davis at a freaking BASKETBALL game and insisted we recruit him for football.
