Again, I'm not talking about beating teams who happened to be ranked. You're supposed to beat the teams you're supposed to beat. Som many of Richt's vaunted 10 win seasons came from the cumulative effect of having Vandy, Kentucky and a significantly down Tennessee program in the division, plus the Buffaloes, the NM States and Charleston Southerns of the world on the schedule.

For every ranked team that Richt beat, there was easily twice if not triple that number of games when the team came out flat, uninspired and all-together unprepared for what should have been a winnable game.

Had we lost against Mizzou, I imagine that many folks would have understood. "Well, it was the first league road game for the new staff. Kirby is still learning the ropes. It was a true freshman QB's start in a hostile environment. They stopped Chubb, and we all know that he's the key to their offense..."

Here's the thing- they didn't roll over. They stuck it out and hung tough. They ADAPTED THE GAME PLAN. you didn't see that from the last staff. Above and beyond all things, this team hasn't rolled over and quit yet. That's the most encouraging thing I've seen, so far.

Leave Richt alone...

We are talking about an unranked Mizzou on the road who lost by two scores to unranked West Virginia. In Richts first year he went to top 10 ranked TN and won. We could argue till we are blue in the face.

Facts are that CMR is a top 3
Coach for us all time and did great things for our program and left it way better than he found it. Be thankful for the dude. With all that said, Kirby is our coach now and I hope we win every game at the helm.

What does this even mean?If a team "happens to be ranked"it means that they are a usually a pretty good team. Missouri "happen to be ranked" and won the SECe in
'13 and we beat them 31-0.

[Because WLOCP '12 and LSU '13 were literally the last times since the original Auburn Blackout in 2007 that the team was adequately prepared to compete for 60 minutes against teams who were better than us.]

We didn't compete vs SC in '13?They ended up being ranked 4th and were favored in the game. How bout AU in '13?They were BY FAR the better team and if not for a complete fluke we beat them.

Do you actually think our defense came out prepared vs Missouri last Sat nt in the 1st half? When we gave up 300+ yards in the air?

Do you think we came out "prepared" vs Nichols amd competed for 60 mins?

Auburn in 2013 absolutely was a better team, and your hypothetical is true. If not for a fluke play, we would have beaten them with the greatest comeback win in school history, but we didn't. The history books will show that one to be a loss, because it was. I can assure you that Bama doesn't play Ifs and Buts with the Kick Six Iron Bowl.

The comeback that never was against Auburn that year was a testament to Aaron Murray and the offense, who bailed out a defense that had no answer for Nick Marshall.

We're debating different sides of a three dimensional object. I'm not saying Richt didn't have quality wins. I'm also not saying that the team played it's best against our 2016 opponents so far. My larger point is that I believe that Richt's teams appeared to be missing a higher gear. A mode that let them respond to adversity, to adapt to changing environments/circumstances during the game, and all together show the ability to get punched in the mouth and get back up.

ETA - If we're debating the results of a 15 year veteran at the same school to the first time coach who replaced him, then that absolutely answers the question of why the coach was ousted, don't you think?

I certainly think so.

My point is that it's pretty freakin irrational to make snap judgements off 3 games and its FAR easier to pick off a 15 year resume as opposed to a 3 week resume as HC.

And yet after 3 weeks, and less than 9 months on the job, Kirby had gotten qualities out of the team that often appeared scarce - resilience and cohesion. There's still a long way to go before they get it all together, but it's encouraging to see the new regime check a new box.

Plus Kirby is recruiting well.
I think someone (the OP) already mentioned his clock management- he did that perfectly.

It was simply time for a change....and who knows, it may not work out....if we don't win the SEC East at least twice in the next 5 years including this season I say pull the plug and start over again....Richt was great but he, like any employee, had grown complacent and was resting on his past....I bet even he is happy about getting a new gig....there is nothing in the world like complacency when you are a competitor. It was simply time for a change....and about 2 years too late....

So would have fired em in '14?A top 10 season and beating 4 ranked teams?

No I would have fired him after going 8-5 in 2013. It was simply time....nothing against Richt and no hard feelings....just business....The fact that Lambert was the starter last year speaks volumes about how un-interested and un-motivated Richt had become....it was simply time, period.

The team was devastated by injuries. When healthy, they beat the #4 and #12 ranked teams and should've beat #2.

Did you see what we put on field vs Vandy or even Missouri?

So you wanted our coach fired one year after finishing #5 in the nation as the SEC east champion 5 yds from the NC game?

In 2013, we lost Aaron Murray (#1 QB) for 2.5 games, Gurley (#1 RB) for 3.75 games, Marshall (#2 RB) for 8.5 games, Mitchell (#1 WR) for all 13 games, Bennett (#2 WR) for 2.5 games, Conley (#3 WR) for 2 games, and Scott-Wesley (#4 WR) for 8.5 games.

Asking any coach to succeed in that situation is pretty absurd. Going 8-5 with that team was really impressive, and stealing what WG has said a lot of that is due to Aaron Murray willing us to win games.

How did not firing him then work out? He was still fired....or let go or mutually agreed to leave whatever...after being 5 yards away from the NC game...the high point of his tenure, by the way....5 yds away...meanwhile what, 4 other teams in the conference have won a title since he was hired at UGA...that in and of itself was reason enough....

I would agree with the injuries and an 8-5 season had there been any political capital in the style of SEC Championships in the seasons when we were lucky enough to escape injuries....there was none. It was time then....it was actually time in 2010.....and if we don't win the SEC East in 2018 it will be time for another change.

College Football has changed....it is a big business at the level UGA plays it at....the days of getting close every 30 years or so just ain't good enough. Seriously....in more than 30 years the closest we have gotten was a great game where we played way over our head against a better oppoponent and came about as close to winning that game as you could get....Richt was a great coach and did some good shite at UGA...brought the program to the point where 10-2 aint good enough...that's saying a lot considering how darling St Dooley did.....but he should have been let go in 2010 and for certain in 2013....Losing to Vandy should never happen...

Given that Richt was only our 6th coach since WWII, that isn't really saying much - he's in the top 50% since FDR's second term, and one of the guys he was competing against was Ray Goff.

Pretty much everyone is glad that he was here, but most are also glad that he's gone. He did well by the school, but he had been eclipsed by a number of other coaches in the conference.
