Things are so different in Athens I hardly recognize them. I've seen some good runs, great classes, near misses, pretty much everything (short of a MNC). I've never seen UGA with this kind of mojo behind us. defense wins, and D lineman are the difference in football royalty vs "good teams" simply because they're aren't that many of them. We're stacking them like chord wood and still going. I think UGA is comfortable letting the country know we WANT to win. I couldn't say that a year ago.

My feel good rant is done.

While I'm optimistic in having Pruitt as our DC, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about so far in recruiting. 5 star Trent Thompson was no doubt a great get in the 2015 class but the other two DT's were 3 stars per 247. LINK We got a 4 star Safety in Roundtree and CB, McGraw but the other 3 DB's, Brisco, Baker and Choates, are all 3 stars.

For the 2016 class, we have 4 star DT, Tyler Clark, and 4 star CB, Chad Clay, and two 3 star CB's, Young and McGee.

Now of most of these guys were 4 and 5 stars, I could see where we would have something to crow about but objectively I'm at best cautiously optimistic knowing our routine level of attrition especially with touted players.

Are we ignoring DEs and LBs?

Valid. I don't see any DE's or LB's on the 2016 commit list so far. We did have a very strong 2015 class of four 4 star DE's: Ledbetter, Patrick, Barnett and Walker. OLB McCrae is a 4 star and Taylor is a 3 star ILB. LINK Sorry, I guess I have been disappointed too often about our hyped teams; the 2011 Dream Team being a case in point. Regardless, Gooooooo Dawgs!!

The difference is the swagger with which we are going out and getting the guys we want. We always have decent-to-good classes, but so far we have just put a stranglehold on the state of GA. You just get the sense that the culture has changed a bit.

While it could look very different by NSD, I can't remember a year in recent memory when we were in on so many high quality players this early in the process. The tell-tale sign that things are different is the buzz among recruits - they are making it known that UGA is where they want to be, and doing a lot of recruiting for us. Great thing to see.

Actually I have been which is why I provided the 247 links. A good example is our 2015 class which was ranked #6 nationally based on the 247 composite ranking. While I was happy to get two 5 stars, in Thompson and Godwin, we finished with twelve 4 stars and fifteen 3 stars. Meanwhile, Auburn had nineteen 4 stars and just seven 3 stars. Now Auburn had 1 less 5 star and a slightly smaller class but you could easily argue that they had the better class in terms of overall quality though their class ranking was #9 vs our #6 ranking. I would also point out that only 2 other teams with top 10 rankings had more 3 star players than 4 star players.

Bottom line: I think we have too often been settling with 3 star players while our toughest competition has been getting more 4 and 5 star players.
