I was on the side of the road hitch hiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a storm. The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong you could hardly see a few feet in front of me. Suddenly I saw a car slowly coming towards me and stopped. Desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, I got in the car and closed the door, just to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on!

The car started moving slowly. I looked at the road and saw a curve approaching. Scared, I started to pray, begging for my life. Then, just before I hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window and turned the wheel. I was, paralyzed with fear, I began to watch how the hand appeared every time I came to a curve. I saw the lights of a small bar down the road so, gathering strength, I jumped out of the car and ran to it.

Wet and out of breath, I rushed inside and asked for two shots of tequila. Then I started telling everybody about the horrible experience I went through. A silence enveloped everybody when they realized I was crying and... not drunk.

About 15 minutes later, two guys walked in. They were also wet and out of breath.

Looking around and seeing me sobbing at the bar, one said to the other, 'Look, there's the idiot who got in the car while we were pushing it.

Bloomington & London: Indiana University Press, 1979 (p. 118, #177)

First time this was ever used.

Apparently, anyone that writes this story likes to take it in the arse. Seems to be true thus far.

Chef, is that you?

When I was a kid I used to hitchhike some but it was always with people I knew (small town folks), most of whom were in school and drove muscle cars back in the 70's. It was a good way to experience some neat rides.

One guy had one of these.

And another one had one of these.

Back in that same time frame I got to ride around in our "family car" which was one of these with the 427 turbo jet engine.
