What are the odds that Sumlin gets fired this season?

I think its unavoidable unless y'all somehow pull a LSU with Les Miles, now who are realistic replacements for him?

I saw Dan Mullen mentioned in another thread, he would be a hell of a coach at a big program.

I don’t bet so I’ll give it to you in a percent as to my best guess.

6 or less wins = 100%
7-5 = 90%
8-4 = 75%
9-3 = 25%
10+ wins 0%

As with anything there’s a few qualifiers. Finishing the season strong and beating LSU will certainly help his case.

I would have never believed it a month ago but I wouldn't doubt if does enough to get another year given how bad a few conference opponents are this year, hoping that doesn't happen because all it would do is prolong the inevitable.

We may stupidly end up going 8-4 (5-3) and finishing in the top 3 in the west. It won't come to anyone's shock if we beat Arkansas, South Carolina, & Ole Miss. Then we would only need to go 2-2 vs Auburn, State, LSU, & Florida. Florida, LSU, & Auburn don't look like anything special at this point. I am not sure our admin will have the stones to fire Sumlin then. But then again we may only win 1 more game all year.

If he gets to 8 wins then he likely is staying. Not even sure he couldn't survive with 7 wins. Not likely but nothing would surprise me.

If he gets a fricking extension for "recruiting purposes" after another mediocre season, there truly is no hope unless that extension destroys the guaranteed part of the contract and forces a minimal buyout on it.

It all probably depends on the mood at the end of the season more than the record.

8-4 season with a loss to Mississippi and LSU to finish the season is a lot different than an 8-4 season with a convincing win against LSU.

So true.

It would be sad and funny that us losing to LSU the last two years is why Coach O is their coach, but he loses to us this year so we keep Sumlin as a coach.

I find no humor in this premise.

Idk what makes us so confident to win games against the likes of Arky and SC... Yeah they are bad but so are we. We'll do well to split them. Sumlin is gone. 6-6 is our ceiling, don't kid yourselves

I still don't think there is any realistic way we could go 5-3 in the SEC. Zero. The conference is way down, but so are we, and we've shown the last few years we play our worst football the later in the year it gets

As young as we are at QB and as deep as we're reaching into the depth chart across the board, we may actually get better as the year goes on. You know Sumlin is doing all he can to end the reputation of last season collapse.

He needs to win to stay - nobody in the Athletic department wants that at this point. So I'd say 90% chance or more that he is gone

Would they get Buffalo Wild Wings to work in reverse?

Remember y'all, I asked a question of his retention if it was an 8-4 with a different feel. I still firmly hope we let him go.

If we get to 8 regular season wins (w/no blowouts other than maybe Bama) rolling with a true freshman QB I think he has a very good chance of being the HC next year. If he wins 9 it's a lock he stays.

Honestly, and I know this board doesn't want to hear this, I don't necessarily think it would be the worst thing in the world to go another year under him.

Unless we can somehow snag a proven big name from a big school like Jimbo Fisher there are enough red flags w/all potential new HCs that it might be prudent to give them all another year at their current schools to show what they are worth.

All of the up and comers are purely potential based and haven't done it long enough to show they can sustain anything.

He still gets an extension under that scenario.

If A&M finishes first or second in the SECW, then he would have shown that he coached his way to keep the job

There are four auto-losses on the schedule. He would have to win every other game to have a shot

I'm as ready to can Sumlin as anybody, but this:

is the truth. Fuente maybe? I can't see him leaving VT this quickly, but if he will then he'd be my choice. Other names being tossed around, particularly Mullen and Gundy, are dreams that just aren't going to happen.

I think UT serves as a hard firm reminder of what can happen if you don't get this right. They've never recovered after firing Fulmer.
