The person hired at each position should tell all of us the level of each program.

Maybe. Maybe not. It depends on their administration's focus. Do they both want a seasoned head coach? Then he's, I'd agree. Do they want an up n comer? Then I'd disagree. I think uscw will lean towards the proven big name if they can get one, and usce will take a gamble on the Memphis coach, which will work out well for them in my opinion.

All I know is I don't mind that permanent rival thing so much right now. They miss on a hire and we get a free yearly win.

My only regret is that I don't have enough upvotes for you.

I remember when they had barely announced the cross division rivalry switch, Spurrier had a comment about being glad he now had an easier game instead of playing Arkansas. My oh my, how the tables have turned. As a historically terrible program, they may become our new Baylor. Their state House finna get jizzed on every year from here on out.

On that basis USCw is as elitist and arrogant as t.u. Maybe more so being in "Silicone Valley" where boob jobs and botox sessions are requirements for employment. Unlike t.u. they probably won't have to settle for their 7th best option.

USCe, not so much. They got lucky with Spurrier and know they probably won't get that caliber of a coach at the outset. The Memphis or Houston coaches could do well there.

Sarge...it breaks my heart that you found that funny.

And fwiw...we're throwing 6 mill base salary at the minimum at the next coach. We'll be just fine...and no, we won't be a free win every year. Smart looks as if he is the likeliest candidate at this point. If Fuente beats Ole Miss this weekend, he'll shoot to near the top of the list. What y'all aren't factoring in is that Elliott may end up being exactly what we need w/o having to look outside for anyone except assistants. The team loves him, he recruits well, he is all about Carolina football....basically a nonretarded version of Dabo.

Every time I hear the name of y'all's interim coach, this is who I think of :

Guy hit the greatest postseason shot in Spurs history.

Hmmm...maybe foreshadowing?

Played for the Spurs (our nickname for Spurrier as well as a position) and made history with his postseason shot (Elliott could make history with his post Spurrier shot at coaching) and the names are the same. -cue Twilight music-

Obviously this was meant to be

Still kinda pissed that I won't get to see Spurrier coach in person (he's always been one of my all time favorite coaches), but respect the hell out of him for doing what he thought was best for the school without hesitation

Yeah, it's going to be very, very weird..and very sad for us..to not see him parading up and down the sidelines this weekend. He's said he's still going to be involved with the program but most likely in a "consultant like" position. His wife is about to graduate from Carolina with a degree in psych. He's staying in his office at Williams-Brice for the rest of the year, as well.

One thing that makes me think Smart is already in the works, though, is the Bama commit we picked up yesterday right after Spurrier announced his resignation. This kid has never even visited Carolina..makes me wonder if some of those kids already know what's in the works. Smart was being primed to take over for Saban after he left from what I understand from a lot of Bama fans...so I feel pretty sure that he'll do just fine if he does end up at Carolina. With the money we're throwing out there, and being the only SEC opening this early, it gives us a huge advantage on picking up someone. I like Fuente, though. Gonna be interesting to see how it all plays out, but our 5* qb coming in next year and the 6 recruits he actually recruited himself to come with him (all 4 and 5*) are all still coming. They said they committed to the school, not the coach. One decommit so far, PJ Blue..but later yesterday he said that we're still his #1 pick. Pretty sure we'll pick him back up. We're down right now, but don't count us out. Awful lot of traffic on tRant about what's going on at Carolina...and by every fanbase but ours basically. Seems a lot of ppl might just be worried about what's about to happen. We're going to be just fine. Y'all just watch and see.

Ain't worried about y'all at all. Think SC will only build on what Spurrier jump-started over there.

I don't know how much of a fit Smart will be for y'all on a cultural level, but I do know he's a damn fine coach. He was on a lot of Aggies' short lists during the coaching search that eventually landed Sumlin in Aggieland.

It was one of those "I don't care who you are, that's funny" moments.

And I don't think anyone should count on USC making a bad hire. Could be a great hire. Y'all are kinda a sleeping giant being near a North Carolina that is filled with talent but doesn't care about college football. All that really separates good programs from bad ones is the quality of their coach, and so every cycle you hire a coach is another roll of the dice. I think USC is in a unique position of riding the most momentum ever into the next hire. It will be break or make.

As an Aggie I don't mind one of the greatest SEC coaches alltime being off the schedule no matter who you hire.

Spurs may not be the HBC any longer, but he's still involved. Still in his office at Willy B and will be the rest of the year, still dropping in on practices and keeping in touch with the players...he just won't be calling the plays and pacing (or storming) the sideline.

SC has more instate talent than a lot of ppl realize. Both Clowney and Lattimore were in state finds, as were a majority of the recent players drafted. We recruit Georgia and Florida pretty heavily as well. Especially Georgia. Lately we've been bringing in some great talent from NJ and Pennsylvania. Our reach is a lot further than a lot of ppl realize...and with someone who actually enjoys recruiting it's just going to get better. (well known that Spurrier hates recruiting) I'm excited to see where we're going and what's to come. We've been thru 0-21 seasons, so the past 10 years have spoiled us. We aren't going to accept anything mediocre any longer. That's the biggest difference Spurrier made at SC.

Yeah, I wouldn't count on South Carolina regressing to pre-Spurrier form. Like you said, there's a ton of talent in that area, and Spurrier probably left a lot on the table just because of his distaste of recruiting. The right coach can have a ton of success.

I'd be really surprised if you have to shell out $6M for a coach, though. Only Saban and Harbaugh make that much. I'd expect you can get any of the realistic candidates for no more than Spurrier's $4M. And probably for less.

Yeah, I don't really see a 6 million dollar scenario. There's not a 6 million dollar candidate out there really. If they're worth that much they typically wouldn't be looking for a new job.

If SC hires Fuentes or Dantonio, then we may be fricked.

Any other retread hire (to the tune of Larry Coker or Mack Brown), and we will be drilling glory holes in the state house like we drill for oil in west Texas.

South Carolina ought to make an offer to Dantonio. He's a Gamecock alum, right? He's done a great job at Michigan St. for several years. Maybe he's had enough of the winters in Michigan.

He'll get the obligatory offer before anyone else will, but few of us expect him to accept. He's mired in success with the Spartans and we really want a younger coach, to be honest. He's 59 and had a heart attack (a real one...not an Urban Meyer one) after a game in the recent past.

He is a Carolina alum and played ball for the Gamecocks while he was at Carolina. It is kinda odd that Spurrier decided to do ESPN Gameday this weekend...which is the Michigan State vs Michigan game...I'm certain he will be talking with Dantonio. Dantonio has stated that he'd like to come back to SC...I guess we'll have to wait and see.

ETA: Meant to mention that at Dantonio's presser Monday the very first question that was asked of him was if he was interested in the Carolina position. He dodged the question and never answered...he would only reply with "We're here to talk about Michigan State".

ETA #2: Bovada has released the current odds on who will replace Spurrier at Carolina.

quote:

Kirby Smart (DC, Alabama): 2.5 to 1
Shawn Elliott (Interim HC, South Carolina): 3 to 1
Justin Fuente (HC, Memphis): 4 to 1
Ed Orgeron (DL coach, LSU): 4 to 1
Jeff Brohm (HC, Western Kentucky): 7 to 1
Matt Campbell (HC, Toledo): 8 to 1
Mark Hudspeth (HC, Louisiana-Lafayette): 8 to 1
Matt Wells (HC, Utah State): 12 to 1
Mark Dantonio (HC, Michigan State): 20 to 1
