Since joining the SEC we have at one point or another been top 5 in Football, Basketball, and Baseball.
Did that ever happen in the Big12 or SWC?
I could probably research it, but I am lazy...

never all three at the same time. this year in basketball is what finally got us top 5 at one point in all three
we were top 5 in football for the final ranking of 2012 and then got as high as 7 in 2013, 6 in 2014, and 9 or 8 this past year
this is the first time we have ever been ranked in the top 5 in our basketball programs history and the first time we have had a ranked basketball team since our entry into the SEC
we spent multiple weeks in the top 3 in baseball last year and even spent some time as #1 for about one week

Pretty remarkable when you stop and think about it.

Would it be moranic to say that we have been the most successful athletic program (Big 3 sports) since we joined the SEC? Or am I overlooking another SEC team? Or has another SEC team hit the top 5 in the big 3 mark since 2012?

Or has another SEC team hit the top 5 in the big 3 mark since 2012?

I believe we've been ranked in the top 10 at least one week every single year since 2010

Yeah it would honestly. We haven't won an SEC title in any of the three and haven't made an Omaha appearance or tourney appearance (will change this year though). UF has a Sugar Bowl appearance, Omaha appearance and final four. OM has a couple NYE6 games, Omaha and a round of 32 tourney appearance.

Yeah I agree. We haven't done shite in basketball though until this year (which isn't over) and LSU, UF, MSU, South Carolina, OM, Vandy and Arkansas have all been to Omaha at least once off the top of my head since we joined
Actually South Carolina hasn't, that's surprising

Didn't realize y'all were at your highest basketball ranking ever. People are starting to realize just how good this team is.

Nope. Wait... No hardware... Yes, it would be until we actually win something.

Yes.
Florida has won the SEC and SEC Tournament in baseball, and made the College World Series. aTm has done neither.
Florida has made a BCS bowl, and also made it to the SEC Championship Game in football. aTm has done neither.
Florida has made an Elite Eight and Final Four in basketball. aTm has done neither.
The Aggies are up there in terms of Big 3 sport success, but no one is really touching Florida.

quote:this is really the kicker. we obviously would have been in a NY6 bowl in 2012 if those existed then and we were a crazy/weird game against tcu last year from being in the CWS. the real difference is our lack of basketball success until this year

Maybe, but not definitely.
Although there is no team limit per conference in New Year's Six bowl games, there were 4 SEC teams ranked ahead of Texas A&M in the final regular season poll in 2012. And South Carolina was ranked one spot behind aTm.
It's not like there would have been 4-6 SEC teams in NY6 Bowl Games. That just isn't ever going to happen.
It would have just came down to who was selected. Would LSU have still gotten the Peach Bowl? Would aTm have still gotten the Cotton Bowl? I don't know. I don't look back on that LSU team as a BCS/NY6 team, simply because they weren't.
2012 was an awesome year. I really believe that Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, and South Carolina were all about as good as each other. Maybe not Florida at the end of the season, but they certainly had some very good wins that year. It was just a lot about matchups when those teams met head-to-head.
Which is why it pisses me off that Alabama won They really weren't any better than anyone else in the conference that year. The only difference is that LSU and Texas A&M had to play Florida, and we both lost.

There were some classic games between the schools also, Bama-LSU, Bama-UGA in the SECCG, Bama-A&M, A&M-UF came down right to the end, I remember LSU-South Carolina being good too.

Unless OU was forced to go to the Sugar/Champions Bowl the Cotton Bowl would have fallen all over itself to ensure the A&M/OU match-up that actually happened. Since KSU finished 11-1 to OU's 10-2 I think the Cotton match-up would have still gone down.
The allure of the Johnny show and the combo of/a classic power in OU vs an old SWC team in A&M would have been too hard for them to pass up.

Kansas State would have likely been in the playoff.
11-1 and a conference champion. Oregon didn't make their championship game, so they didn't get the extra game and were also 11-1. Plus, Stanford probably would have cock blocked Oregon.
ACC had no teams worth. Ohio State was undefeated, but ineligible for the postseason, so the Big Ten is out. Likely would have been Notre Dame, Alabama, Kansas State, and then Stanford or Florida.
That would have put Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, under the new system, assuming the Sugar Bowl wasn't a playoff game.
All of this is just to say that it's hard to go back and say that something certainly would have happened. There's too many variables to it. LSU was in the Peach Bowl in 2012, but I doubt they would have been under the new system. And LSU was ranked higher than aTm and beat aTm that season. Does that mean we should look back on that season as a potential NY6 for aTm, but not LSU? I don't think that's a fair way to look at things.
