Tony Hurd played out of his mind this season. What are his chances that he has earned himself as a starter either as a safety or nickel back?

I think he at least will be our starting nickel back.

he started as the nickel back virtually all year. We usually didn't start a nickel back though as we more often started in a 4-3 formation.

I don't think Hurd will be a starter at safety. He's a smart hard-working player but is simply too limited. He doesn't have the range to play in coverage or the size to play in the box. He's a specialist and a good one.

That about sums it up. Hurd kind of reminds me of Dustin Harris except at Safety. He knows the plays and works hard but in the end he just doesn't have the physical tools to be a top flight player. He will earn time because of his effort and knowledge but in truth it is a good sign when you see someone else beating him out. For instance if you put Hurd in a 1 on 1 matchup with a 6'3 WR that weighs 220 he is screwed. If he is up in run support against a 6'1 230 lb RB that got past the LOS you have to pray he can get the guy by the legs and hold on to trip him up.

Hurd is really nice to have when you play a Spread team that throws the ball around a ton because he is excellent in Zone Coverage and knows where to be but he's essentially useless against the big and physical teams of the SEC.

I think I am seeing a trend in the coaching staff's recruiting focus when it comes to safeties:

6'0 175
6'2 215
6'3 210
6'4 215

Was looking at his stats, he has 67 tackels with 41 solo, 14 TFL's and a pick. I was at almost every home game this year and he always made a big play. For a while he was leading the team in tackels from the nickel. He can do alot, I heard his name called alot at Kyle just stuck out to me.

Love the guy but he is still a 5'9 Safety that isn't fast enough to be a CB. That really limits where you can use him. As I said, nice guy for using in Nickel packages where he has help and is covering a spot on the field but putting him in man to man coverage is a dangerous thing, he just gives up too much size and he can't run with a burner.

Disagree.

Dustin had all the tools needed. He has top end speed, quicks, but this never developed into an plus corner. I don't think he ever reached his ceiling.

Hurd on the other hand IMO is reaching his ceiling. He doesn't have the tools to be elite like Dustin could have been. However he makes a damn good nickel back and isn't afraid to lay the wood.
