On South Carolina's PI, Pope beat his man so badly that he had to pull the jersey to prevent the TD.

I converted his shoes to Adidas and I am still working on changing the balls to footballs (if I can), but here is the first draft.

Driving all day and late to this game, just wanted to chime in and say that was an excellent writeup.

Hilliard is definitely a concern but everybody HAS to be happy with Mastro and Garrett and Watts, at a minimum.

I so badly want to discuss the possibility of being 7-0 and a near top 5 team going into the Bama game, but we need to get a lot better on defense and keep everyone healthy.

At least this year I have hope that we can make defensive improvements. There's a lot of players that I saw out there that are very coachable.

As for Howard Matthews, we need to train him just like I do my hunting dog. Electric collar to shock Jim when he creeps up to help the linebacker when his motherfrickin assignment is to play deep zone/cover.

Watts was a pleasant surprise.

Garrett was exactly what the coaches said - as good as advertised.

Hilliard will be a big loss hopefully he can get back before we get to some of the power offensive teams we will face.

I don't disagree. SafetySam thinks he should be moved to linebacker as he can obviously tackle. He made a bunch of good plays/tackles that I noticed. Unfortunately I don't think he can be spared from the secondary.

7-0 is a definite possibility, to be quite honest. I Mississippi state will be a test but no worse than the test we just crushed against USC. It's going to really depend on key defensive players staying healthy at this point.

I still worry about the MS schools before Bama. OM didn't look great last night but they might be the best DL we face all year, and we always have great games with them

MSU is on the road and I think they could give our defense some problems. Neither of those games are givens. Both those teams could be better than USC when it's all said and done

The most encouraging thing about the defense: The biggest flaws are easily correctable.

We gave USC 14 free points, they only had two scoring drives in which they truly earned it. And not every team we play has the ability or the inclination to go downfield like that consistently.

The thing that stood out to me was the aggressiveness. Watts made aggressive mistakes, as tmc said. Last year I felt we stood around grabbing at players instead of stepping the frick up and hitting someone. I'd rather we blow a coverage or get a PI because of over pursuing or being too aggressive then give up an easy TD because of laziness or going through the motions, which is what it seemed like last year. It may be sad that's improvement, but at least we have the right attitude

Yessir!

Along that line one play that stood out to me was fish Watts obviously going for the pick instead of a sure tackle. Not a good play and that will be corrected, but I love that he was in position and aggressively doing his thing, rather than a Howard-like "Oops" get-faked-out-of-your-jock-then-watch-him-run-for-a-TD move.

Agreed. And, we were the more physical team, on both sides of the ball. To me, that's the happy ingredient in all of this. We scrambled the brains of the college football world last night. It has now officially begun.

Like Grodebag (father of cokebottleag) forcing us to reevaluate our priorities

Admit it, that's a good analogy.
