Sure there is, Kyle knows he's not the future here so he's moving on
I wish him the best

There is no future for anyone here. Our program is a damn wasteland.

Agreed. sumlin is a dead man walking.

Good thread Projectpat. Until the OC situation is settled I am going to keep my powder dry. If nothing else because the Malik melt was miserable, and kinda for nothing with 20/20 hindsight.

I think he modernized us and did some pretty good things, but it's not mattering anymore.
He most definitely got the ball rolling in the right direction, and that counts for a lot, but that ball is no longer rolling.

No offense to Sumlin but this is a results oriented business and we need better results.
If he doesn't fix it next year, it'll be time to move on. And it'll be because of a lack of results, nothing else. Some folks try to make it about Sumlin's "arrogance" or other such fiddle faddle, but the reality us that when the results are subpar, it's open season on any aspect of a coach's personality.
He could be the nicest guy in the world and people would say he's too soft to get the job done. He could be bland as they come and people would say he's not inspiring enough.
Heard the same about Gregg Popovich in San Antonio early in 1999. People thought he was full of himself firing the coach and appointing himself as head coach/GM. He came within a whisker of getting fired before turning it around. He brought the results in the nick of time, and now he's lauded for his brusque attitude.
Personality can be spun as a positive or a negative. Ws and Ls are not so easily spun. Got to bring results.

I don't think we can say that with certainty until we know who the OC will be next year and if we sign a top 15 class on NSD. Just IMHO though.

You're generous. I'm in the "burn everything down, let's start over with Tom Herman" boat.
herman is the type of coach we are always missing out on.
herman is next legend up. hopefully the chuckster gets 8 wins (or by some miracle, more) in austin next year.
hopefully chavis doesn't bail out sumlin like he did miles for all those years.

Completely agree with this.
Herman will again win the conference next year with a better team, and be the hottest coach in the country and will be able to pick which school he wants, because everyone will want him.

You know who else we said this about???? FRAN

I was excited about getting Fran, true.
But we know Herman can succeed at a high level with his offense. In his three years at OSU, his squads finished #21, #3, and #5 in scoring offense. The year before he arrived, they were #81.
This year's Houston team was #13, after coming in at #57 last year.
He can handle the offense. Or he knows enough to be able to hand it off to someone who will make it hum. If he retained Chavis, and there's no reason why he wouldn't, we would be set.
Plus, it would be hard to find someone with better ties to Texas for recruiting, particularly in the Houston area. He's been a coach at some level in Texas for 12 of his 17 years, with stops at UTx, Rice, Sam Houston, and of course, Coog High.
If Sumlin doesn't REALLY right the ship next year, Herman is my first choice.
(I would have pulled for Chad Morris, but I don't think he's going to be able to turn around SMU fast enough to justify hiring him.)

Just curious but why not hire a coach with SEC experience? Hugh Freeze knows how to beat Bama on a recurring basis, which is what A & M must do to compete in the SECw. He is also a great recruiter. We can definitely money whip Freeze next year better than Ol Miss and he would be a good match for us.

Agree fully. The world was ending for a few days there, and then what? All we lost was Malik, Daylon and Kyler stayed, and most of all we got an incredible DC that is going to continue paying dividends. The Chavis pull is why Sumlin still gets a pass in my book.

Seriously? Some of you are so easily convinced. I'm glad the guys with money and power aren't so fickle.

I'm about to take off on a plane, so who wants to do a comparison of the same metrics before Sumlin came here.

sumlin called plays for one year and has never been considered a great football mind. he has no real track record as a coordinator. sumlin got hired because he showed he could run a program and for recruiting reasons.
herman has KILLED IT as a playcaller everywhere he's been. all his time at houston is just validation to be able to run a program.
if you think herman and sumlin are very comparable, then you need to read up.

How about this: Herman was picked by Urban Meyer to be his OC at Ohio State. Is there a stronger recommendation than that?

Agree. Herman walked into a very good situation at UH. Their defense was already strong and they had some good weapons on offense. The next 2 years at UH will tell a lot about how well Herman can maintain that defense and if the level of talent can stay above what UofH is used to. He'll probably lose 3 games next year. Don't get me wrong, they'll lose to OU, but I'll be rooting for Houston to embarrass the Big12.
