I still think this about 2-3 times a week here.

The first time I drove... eh, I didn't actually drive, but no driver could have done any better... in Houston it took 2+ hours to get 10 miles to the UH game at Rice Stadium in '76. We got there at halftime when UH was blowing us out. I've never been back, don't ever want to go back.

And then there's crime... our senior year SafetySam and I had a Houston fish who subscribed to the Chronicle come to our room and read the most interesting murder story of the day. There were always multiple choices, but he did a good job of picking the best.

Not a fan, in other words.

We were all in on oxen back in those days, not horses. And no, they weren't tough to control but the horn-jams were horrendous.

Harden up.

Born and raised in Southwest Houston. If I don't see a shooting on the morning news I just assume someone missed.

I only claim credit for "frick". I'm pretty sure "saw 'em off" came later, from somebody with a grudge.

Wimp.

Grew up in SouthEAST Houston. Went to Jones High School. Every morning the security guard would ask you if had a knife or a gun. If you answered in the negative, he would ask you which one you would prefer.

Houston Jones! In Nov 1975, Victoria played Jones at Jones in basketball. We beat your butts 101-100. One of the best bb games I ever saw. We were fortunate to walk out alive.

it's an acquired skill. Once you learn it, traveling in South America feels surprisingly safe

two primary tips for survival
1) don't signal. It shows weakness. Move into a lane and then signal that way they can't cut you off
2) go faster or slower. Faster cars have to react to slower ones so you want to be on the extremes. Being in the middle means you can't whip around a slowpoke because somebody faster may be doing the same to you. It's much easier to vary between the extremes

Well said. I didn't grow up in Houston nor ever live there, but I go quite frequently. I was born to drive in that city. I prefer the "faster" extreme. Im from Austin and I freaking hate the drivers there (same for SA).

I've gotten two speeding tickets in Austin. My finely tuned Houston driving style does not go well there. I always forget other cities actually set up speed traps

Houston driver here. We drive fast. We switch lanes. I will hop on your arse if you aren't doing 10 over in the left lane. And if we don't know ho to merge I will throw shite at you from my car.

Using a turn signal to indicate a lane change is a sign of weakness

IDK about weakness, but it lets the car behind know you're trying to get in front of them so they're going to speed up so you don't.
