Fulmer and Mack didn't do anything spectacular in their first four years at Tennessee and Texas

If we win out and Washington loses a single game, we are in. Playoff in that scenario would potentially be Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State/Michigan, and A&M.

Colorado is the one to watch with Washington I think

They likely play in the Pac Championship

I think Washington State has the best shot as its a road rivalry game and Leech is a clever sumbitch.

Honestly, Wasington losing is more likely than us winning our. We need to be more concerned about OM and LSU and if we pull it off then just be happy with whatever happens. Even when OM was bad Freeze out coached and nearly beat Sumlin and we always play soft and scared when LSU hits us in the mouth.

Hell it could be anyone. Cal, Arizona State, USC. I don't see Washington getting through unscathed.

Our destiny will be in our control at some point. All we have to do is not frick it up.

All were better recruiters than Sumlin, so that negates your premise regardless.

That being said, you can have an isolated great years with average coaching. Average to bad coaches don't win a national title, five conference titles and average 10 wins a year for over a decade. Calling someone like Lloyd Carr an average coach is beyond asinine.

Look at how those coaches did against comparable talented teams and truly good coaches.

Mack 6-9 vs Stoops
Carr 1-6 vs Tressel
Fulmer 3-7 vs Spurrier

It's easy to win 75% of your games when you start with a significant advantage. Not a single one of those coaches would have won a sec title with the 4 teams Sumlin had. And none would win this year.

So let's take your argument to its conclusion:

If Sumlin is an average coach, and can't recruit well enough to lock up a bunch of auto wins to get to 10+ every year, why keep him? What does he do well that justifies his salary?

He recruited well enough post-2012 to win a title. He just had bad coordinators, poorly coached lines and a bad run of talented but weak-minded QBs.

I think it's fair to consider he could do the same thing coming off a hypothetical 11 win 2016. But with much better staff, better coaching/talent along the line, and hopefully he hits the QB jackpot with one of starkel/mond/Stidham.

Not excusing past failures (he deserves full blame for his staff choices and QB choices), and it's an absolute must that we win out and finish strong in recruiting. But if that happens, of course you keep rolling with Sumlin.

In other words, a head coach doing a poor job leading his program

The fact that we MIGHT be better in the future because we're paying a kings ransom for coordinators to prop him up doesn't change who he is.

What the hell are you talking about? 2012, even after the miraculous Evans catch and subsequent crazy-legs Manziel TD Ole Miss was up by 4 and had 4th and an inch. Make it and the game is basically over. Hair god could have lined up under center and fallen over to make the first down. But Hugh has the hair god line up in the shotgun. Jonathan Stewart crashes through and stops the RB for a loss. Worst play call I have seen, ever.

Next, Manziel to Swope, game over.

I get that you don't like Sumlin for whatever screwed up reason you have. But to compare him unfavorably to Hugh Freeze is just lunacy.

Anytime Aggy has nothing to do but not lose to weaker teams...

It's concerning that we haven't looked good for any sustained length of time since the second half of the Arkansas game. I think the book is out on our offense and our defense is banged up.

The first quarter of do against OM will tell us everything we need to know about how this is gonna go.

I actually agree with the naysayer about the Ole Miss game.... we haven't looked like a #4 team IMO.

But I also will disagree with respect to recruiting as well... It's always going to be hard to beat Bama with their recruiting and coaching advantage while Saban is there...I don't see a natty in the cards unless we get superior coaching and guys who stick around for their 4th years. Look at Moo State - when Prescott was a junior - they had a fantastic year...I believe that team was a very senior laden team - makes a difference.

Sumlin winning a national title wouldn't change his opinion that Sumlin is incapable of winning a national title

What's so hard to understand about that?
