Up 47-0 five minutes into the 2nd half before putting in 2nd and 3rd teamers

Sam has the best offense at that level and a better offense than a bunch of G5 teams.

Seen enough to think this defense will be no where close to elite. But I think they'll be good enough to win every game, if the offense ever shows up

In just the last two games, I feel like I've seen our DBs lose outside contain on a simple run play more times than you would see in most seasons.

If we keep running 30 plays less than the opposition every game the defense is going to suffer. If we could start getting some first downs the defense will look a lot better.

Yeah, it's unsustainable

Need to find a way to get some sacks. And they need to find a way to stop some third down runs. So far teams haven't needed to pass the ball. They seem to want to run and run out the clock.

Scoring D: 9th (8.7)
Rush D: 83rd (154.33)
Pass D: 9th (147.3)
Total D: 31st (301.7)
Red Zone Score %: 15th (67%)
Red Zone TD %: 6th (22%)
Long Plays from Scrimmage 10+: 24th (30)
Long Plays from Scrimmage 20+: 11th (7)
Long Plays from Scrimmage 30+: 3rd (1)
DEF SP+: 3rd (11.9)
Football Outsiders DF+: 6th (1.6)

All this when you consider we're losing the TOP badly. Ranked 123rd.

Not perfect, but this is a very strong defense so far and they're still getting healthy, unsuspended, and unkicked out for targeting.

The LOS play is the concerning part, both against the run and the lack of pass rush, as I expected this to be one of the strengths of the team. We’ve struggled to get pressure even against the two weaker opponents. Perhaps with a better TOP split and more rest for the DL that would improve. On the flip side, this is the best secondary I can remember watching at A&M.

Very shaky start but the defense was outstanding after that goal line scoop and score

My biggest concern about the defense is generating a strong pass rush from our edge guys. Lost a lot of production across the entire DL so we're counting on a ton of unproven, albeit very talented, young guys to make a big leap from last year or hit the ground running right away for those new to campus.

A month into the season and we're 100th in the nation in sacks per game because no one can win a 1-on-1 and we're not doing much scheme wise to generate pressure.

We're making due so far, but games vs MSU and Ole Miss are going to be very difficult if the pass rush doesn't improve.

I think its just simply due to inexperience. We have a lot of raw talent on the d-line, but a lot of it is young. Should get better as the season goes on and they gain experience. Should aboslutely pay off in a year or two where we should be giving opposing running backs and QB's nightmares before we play them. Like Clemson a few years ago where their entire line was first round picks.

I do absolutely agree we need to get better pressure now though. It will be long games if the QB has plenty of time to throw.

And force some more turnovers, I'm too lazy to look it up but I bet we arent very high on that either for the season. The Arkansas fumble return is the first one I can remember in awhile. But we havent been big on turnovers for years, even under Elko.

We are playing a huge number of freshmen, way more than anticipated. Will be great by the end of the year, but they are learning on the fly right now

We had quite a few years under Sherman and Sumlin where our pass rush was incredible, but our secondary was shite. I think I prefer it the other way if I have to choose. DJ's got some options to bring a little more in the way of exotic pressure, so hopefully he'll do more of that as the year progresses and our stud underclassmen keep racking up reps.

Cant call a defense elite when it is god awful on 3rd down. Can’t blame the offense for that either. It’s one thing to have trouble killing drives in the 4th but we are giving up 8-12 play drives in the first quarter on the reg.

The defense is on the field 3/4 of the game because offense is garbage

Defense has been hung out to dry a good bit this season. But they aren’t elite.

If this was only a second half issue you’d be right. But they suck at getting off the field on 3rd downs from the jump. The offense is not to blame when the defense can’t stop anyone in the first quarter.
