But wait: I thought people in the athletic department had an axe to grind and didn't know what they were talking about in regards to football.

I gotta disagree. We're talking about college kids, not professionals. It is the coaches' JOB to put them in positions to succeed.

If your stud, the one YOU named QB1, is too hurt to perform at his normal level (and it's clear that he was in the OM game), YOU have to make that call as coaches to get him out of there before he hurts himself further, hurts his draft stock, hurts the team, hurts his confidence. I don't care if he has tears streaming down his face, pleading to go back into the game and play through the pain (as has been ingrained within him to do likely since the first time he stepped foot on the gridiron), you override him and make sure folks know that he was compromised. It's not coddling--it's common (and professional) courtesy. That's one of the traits coaches are supposed to impart upon their charges--professionalism.

Amen. Managers do this almost every single game in baseball. If a guy's jacked up, he sits.

If Murray would have been told he was redshirting then either a) he would have signed somewhere else, or b) he would be two years behind Allen and given the chance to get ready to play in this league.

So basically A. He wasn't going to redshirt.

I honestly think we ended up with the right guy actually. I know people are down on Kyler's size and decision making, but the kid can scramble.

The sad truth is our Oline might be even worse next year, so whoever the QB will be will be running for their lives... and Kyler is the better runner. I have been nervious that if Kyle was the "winner" he would just get hurt again as he was forced to re-enact David Carr's Texans career next season. At least Kyler can get bigger and learn to make better decisions, Kyle will never be faster.

I know right now no one agrees with me, but I have been really nervious for weeks Kyler would transfer after the season. That happens and I am done for.

Props to Kyle Allen for being a class act through this whole season and his entire time at A&M.

Can't disagree. Good luck to him.

Yup. Should have told him if he wanted to be the next Manziel, he should be man enough to redshirt like Manziel did.

I don't think it was that simple. Sumlin says that and Kyler goes to Texas. If Kyler went to Texas then maybe (probably?) so does Mack and Lodge. That gives Charlie real recruiting momentum that he carries into this NSD, and maybe enough talent to make a bowl this season. That closes our window to steal some of their thunder.

But let me say I never thought for a second after the 2013 season that Sumlin could really win a national title at A&M. If he couldn't win one with the GOAT it's not happening unless the Chavis/Spurrier unicorn does it for him. To me the whole point of the Sumlin regime is to build up talent while Texas is in a down cycle (aka what is normally their talent) so that when they actually turn it around with Herman or Kelly or whatever hyped a-hole they will get we have a chance to win a title with the coach post Sumlin and maybe hold onto our talent position (and not be pushed back into the Texas Tech talent-level hell hole that the 2000's proved to me is the otherwise natural position for a modern A&M). He was always our John Blake at best, but it's obvious Rome wasn't built in a day. College football is a caste system like old India, and without four or five top 20 classes on the roster you don't have a chance unless your coach is a god. Oh and finding a God coach is like catching lightning in the bottle with your teeth. We need stability to recruit while Texas is down, personally I care more that we clean up the OC situation soon and sign a top 15 class.

Just my opinion though, and honestly that isn't a new opinion at that. Sorry for the long post.

I don't. I think Kyle was the right guy and Kyler would need to be a senior to do anything special.

Fair enough. I know my opinion is not shared by many. And it is hard to not say that the way Kyle was treated was fricked up. But I think both Kevin's deserve some of that blame.

Once damontre declared for the draft, no coach in America could have won a title with the 2013 team. There was no talent left on defense because Sherman got destroyed in recruiting.

Sumlin was the perfect coach for the 2012 season. He took a team of losers, added a coked-out QB and gave us one of the most enjoyable seasons possible.

And he was doing pretty well in 2013 until Johnny got horse-collared, then hurt. Since then, it's been a comedy of errors (with some moments of brilliance sprinkled in), but it's crazy how people are rewriting history. He most likely will not win a title here at A&M...but let's not act like that some huge indictment on Sumlin. We have a pathetic track record in football, almost no coach is winning a title at A&M.

Maybe, but my problem is we didn't even really come close.

What moments of brilliance? He got Chavis because external influences forced him to fire Snyder. If not for that, Snyder would still be our DC.

We lost to:
12 win team
11 win team
11 win team (with a gimpy jff)
10 win team (with a gimpy jff)

I'm as disappointed as anybody that things didn't work out with Johnny here, but I don't think 2013 is a knock on Sumlin, especially not once Johnny got hurt.

Landing Chavis is a moment of brilliance. You can explain it away however you want, I don't care.

The 2014 recruiting class.

The SECN debut.

Its been a whole lot of shite in between, but there have been some legitimate bright spots. Enough that we're a good OC hire away from being a threat again.

We are far, far past the issue of an OC now. If you think an OC will magically erase the locker room issues and the lack of organization and structure in the program, you are in for a rude awakening.

If we magically hired Lincoln Riley or Kliff, or some other badass OC, we'd be set. I'm skeptical there's someone out there that good, though.

As lucky as Sumlin was with Chavis, he caught a bad break with Kevin Wilson and Dana keeping their jobs.

I agree with you

I think we have to have a dual threat qb until the o-line is better

Not sure if this has been discussed, but Ol Wild Bill said Allen probably would have stayed if he was given assurance that Spav was staying on TA radio. If true, why the frick would he want to stay under that abysmal offensive scheme?

I realize I wasn't behind the closed doors, but it sure seemed like the entire staff handled his situation horribly. If anything I would have thought he decided to hit the road because he was told Spav WAS staying, and I honestly couldn't blame him.
