We should have fired him last year. Trevor Knight could have player coached us ala bill russell to 9 wins this year.

I guess my question is what is the fan base expectation of Sumlin?

Petrino......when you absolutely, positively, have to win at all costs.
Unfortunately, we do not have the fanbase with that mentality. Yet.

Not really, no.
In fact if you think about Sumlin mostly beats the teams he is supposed to beat. He mostly wins bowl games, and beats teams with fewer advantages like Arky and most of the OCC games. Until last weekend he mostly lost to the Big 6 teams that out recruit us and teams like Ole Miss and MSU only when they have once in a lifetime QBs. Last weekend was really an out of the ordinary weekend for Sumlin.
Our problem is we don't beat the teams we shouldn't beat, which is exactly how a Boise, Utah and TCU got the national respect they do have. And that didn't start under Sumlin, RC lost big bowls, Sherman got killed by LSU, and Fran got killed in the Cotton Bowl or against ranked teams not named Texas period.
The reason Johnny's Bama win was a big deal is because that is the kind of game you have to win to be more than what you are. That is not who we are, we have mostly done well when those around us go through down cycles (aka when we should win).
Until now Sumlin has built 8 win seasons on teams we should beat. The inverse is for this season to have the magic we wanted last Friday then Sumlin eventually would have had to beat a LSU we cannot outright expect to beat. Maybe the silver lining today is the team will be more ready to face such a challenge when it comes to prove something to everyone.
Ten wins is still my standard, been that way for months and is still doable.

Another mid season meltdown. It really began with the Tennessee game but 5 unforced turnovers gifted that game to us and obscured the obvious. Sumlin is not the guy to take us where we need to be. He needs to be fired right after the carnage that will be the 5th loss in a row to LSU.

Miss St was the definition of a "winnable game" that you can't lose if you want to take the next step
Auburn+LSU last year. Win those two very winnable games and he has a 10 win season as our recruiting rivals are melting down. Instead he lost both and we lost all momentum.

You can start by not losing to teams that are clearly inferior.
2016 Mississippi State
2015 Auburn
2014 Missouri
2011 Missouri, Kansas State
2009 Colorado
2008 Arkansas State
2007 Kansas (I don't care that they went 12-1, you don't lose to fricking Kansas in football)
2006 Texas Tech
2005 Iowa State
2004 Baylor
2002 Missouri, Texas Tech
2001 Texas Tech
2000 Colorado
1999 Texas Tech
1998 t.u.
1997 Texas Tech
1996 USL
1994 SMU (tie)
1991 Tulsa
It goes back further

Les Miles will not be hired by a successful Power 5 program. I love the guy and he'd have been a great fit 10 years ago. But that ain't happening, and it shouldn't.
Someone else mentioned Mike Leach. Whoever that was should be flogged. Repeatedly.
Yet somebody else mentioned Petrino: In four years at Arkansas he went 17-15 in SEC play (Sumlin is 21-17 at the moment - that's 53% vs. 55% - comparable) and he never beat Alabama, though to his credit went 2-2 against LSU. But beyond winning percentage, the guy is ultra-slimy.
Jury is still out on Chad Morris.
If Tom Herman goes anywhere it will be to USC. We're not stupid enough (despite appearances on this board) to fire a successful coach for a guy who got smoked by Navy, and if we WANTED him and USC did also, he's going to USC.

I tried reasoning with the exact same argument Saturday night, but couldn't get through. Some people have just gone off the deep end and can't return.

We will go 7-6.
Sumlin better be fired tonight.
We blew a 2 score lead to a true freshman making his first ever start.

Lol. This is a joke, right? CLM is famous for late game debacles. Fumbling away the auburn game with poor clock management is what lost him his job!

Most of the posters here chimed in before the season and had this team winning 6 or 7 games. Most thought we would lose to UCLA, Arky, UT, and yes Ole Miss.
We all thought that there might be issues with the running game, because of the new RBs and OL. We didn't even have a QB at the end of last year.
Trevor Knight couldn't throw, but he hid many of the issues with the OL and running game. That went out of the window after he was injured during the MSU game. The 2 losses still hurt, but it doesn't change the fact that this team has actually "outperformed" expectations 4/5 years.

I think you're mistaken.
Most people here had 8-10 wins if my memory is correct
