People try to keep putting this on Sumlin, because they just don't like the guy. The truth is that this was all on Spav. Spavital was responsible for the offense and the QBs, while Sumlin's responsibility was to evaluate his staff.

I don't think Sumlin wanted to fire Spav. I believe Spav was likely only to get demoted back to QB coach. This is what Sumlin did with McKinney when he failed as an OC. This also explains why you lose both QBs.

1) Allen leaves, because he knows that Spav is getting demoted and he likely won't win the job next year. 2) Kyler leaves, because he had a rocky relationship with Spav.

Also, both QBs looked at OU as a possible destination. There was probably some back-channel communication from Stoops to the Murray's wanting to know what they were thinking. Stoops needed a QB quick because he was losing both of his back-up QBs (Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas).

On the contrary, even with our poor finish to the season the Allen and Murray transfers were what flipped the majority of the fanbase on Sumlin. His approval rating was still well above 50% after the LSU game because Spav had become the scapegoat like McKinney and Snyder before him.

Many people aren't blaming Sumlin for the QB situation because they don't like him, they don't like him because of how he handled the QB situation.

Kevin Sumlin is the head coach, and a handsomely paid one at that. The buck stops with him.

This is true and it should terrify you. He didn't want to fire Snyder or demote McKinney, either.

He wanted to keep Spav as OC, his hand was forced in this matter.

Allen left because Sumlin threw him under the bus instead of telling everyone he was playing injured and he didn't trust him anymore. Murray left because he's an entitled little bitch.

We're not ever going to really know, but this has always sounded right to me.

For me it's hard to blame Sumlin too much over the mess. If he had not landed Murray everyone here including myself would have been calling for his head. And getting him to A&M apparently meant promises of no redshirt and probable playing time. I think he felt enormous pressure to get Murray into games. On the other hand, a simple "Kyle is hurt" might have kept Allen at A&M.

Agree with Roger. Allen was clearly playing hurt against Bama and Ole Miss. Bad enough to make him play those games hurt (possibly to protect Murray?), but it was a low blow to give the impression that Allen's struggles were unrelated to injury, that he just sucked.

That was the first time I started thinking that Sumlin might not be the guy.

That last sentence is key. I agree.

I don't blame Sumlin for signing Murray. Spurning the little shite (even as entitled as he was) would have been a sure recipe for disaster right out of the gate. And, honestly, I think that given the circumstances around Murray's signing, Sumlin handled that end of it about as well as could possibly have been expected.

Where he failed egregiously was in his handling of Allen. You knew the guy already felt underappreciated due to not being a TX high school product, and still left him out there in the breeze when his dip in performance was due to circumstances beyond his control. That ain't cool.

Agree with all of that as well.

Hell our own fan base probably didn't help either, crowd would cheer way louder whenever the announcer would say Kyler was coming in than for Kyle in the pre game introductions.

I still wonder if Kyle knew Kyler was wanting to transfer out as well. I realize he didn't like how he was treated but I do wonder if he would have stuck around knowing he was going to be the guy now that he didn't have to constantly look over his shoulder with Kyler gone.

He also failed to ever develop a personal relationship with Allen. Who was the leader of his football team. So with Spav leaving Allen felt alone on an island
