Chavis liked a smaller faster defense at lsu and would convert safeties to nickle/head hunter positions. He had the luxury of coming into a defense that had a lot of defensive line talent, but it grew thin towards the end of his career at lsu. You guys obviously have Mack and Garrett there to anchor down. How does the rest of the defense look and who will be that freak athlete to step up into the head hunter role? Good luck this season, talk will definitely see improvement on that side of the ball.

Speed hasn't been an issue on D for a while now. Its being out physicaled and depth.

I believe our front 7 will be beastly.
Any combo of Hall, Obi, Mack, Garrett, Zo, Walker, Z, Johnson, & Cunningham on the line should be strong. We finally have enough guys to truly rotate 2 units. At LB, while it was a weakness last year due to injuries, I really feel it has to potential to be very good with AJ healthy (likely our best LB last year, but he got injured game 1), Alaka in year 2 (true fish who got better as the season went on, won D MVP at bowl game), Walker, & Washington. Finally you have guys like George or Moore who might contribute year 1, might not.

The biggest concern is the secondary.

I feel very comfortable with our safeties. Watts lead the team in INTs is in year 2. Evans in a JUCO transfer who could be our best player on D besides Myles. I feel good about Wilson too. I believe he was starting by the end of last year over SR Matthews. Then you throw in Dunning & Pryor and we quickly turn a so-so position last year into a strength potentially.

Moving over to corner is scary. Harris is an upperclassman now, but he's still too small. Davis is more physical, but still largely unproven. Ellis will start at nickel. Overall its our weakest or shallowest position. We really need a surprise to step up like Harvey or Elam.

Good post Farmer.

Corner is definitely a huge concern. Both Harris and Davis were pretty terrible last year. LB has potential as Farmer described, but could easily still be a weak spot. But the difference between this year and last year is that last year EVERY defensive area was a question. This year we know the DL and safeties are going to be solid. If we can show moderate improvement elsewhere it'll be enough.

Devante Harris excels at playing press man. He's also up to 185.

The staff had apparently been a lot higher on our corners than message boarders.

I'm also pretty confident that Brandon Williams will give us some good depth.

take it fwiw but the staff is more concerned about LB. I'm guessing it's because so few participated in the spring but who we put out there were awful at times which leaves a lot of questions

That totally slipped my mind.

That's interesting.

I really feel like by the bowl game Alaka had turned the corner and become a solid LB. AJ was studly vs USCe. That means we just need Washington to step up on the strong side (did I get that right?) to have a good starting unit.

During the spring it was R Moore, Claude G, and walk-ons right?

I've also heard that while message boards think corner is the worst position on our roster, the coaches think it's LB, again. There's just no depth. One of our starters gets hurt or has to be spelled for a bit and we're Mastrogiovanni (not him literally though, he retired) bad again.

But we can get by with a so-so LB mixed in here or there if other positions are strengths. Someone like Garrett alone can cover up a lot of warts. See JJ in Houston.

If our linebackers are healthy I expect people to be surprised at how good our defense plays.

If not, I think we'll still be moderately better than last year.

During the SCAR game, before he got hurt, I was going nuts with excitement over AJ. I was like "mothe******, we finally have a LB". Then.... ugh.

I dunno if he'll be the same post injury. Tmc can probably say.

Not the same at all. Garrett is weak as a run stopper so far. Watt is an elite run stopper, and he also is incredible at getting to QB, especially considering he's a 3-4 DE. Those guys usually don't have many stats.

Garrett is good, but I've seen tons of bad defenses with elite pass rushers on them. The Houston Texans with Mario Williams come to mind.

Haven't heard anything on Hilliard. I'll try to ask in the next week or so. I'm not sure what can be said til he practices for real though.

He looked great up until he got hurt. It was gruesome too.

Seems to have issues with the offense whenever Sumlin runs 3rd down drills at the end of practice, but other than that, solid.

I take it to be a "Third and Chavis" joke.

It will be hilarious if this year's LSU game comes down to a late 4th quarter 4th down stop and Chavis' D stuffs them.

If this happens the aggy defense won't be the only one stuffing d's.
