How is our center still so off-target on snaps?

I get that he is a freshman, but we are 7 games in at this point and still getting snaps that either float or skip. Totally disrupts timing, and that suck in this kind of offense.

How hard is it to get this right? I've never played the position, but I have to think this is not exactly a new requirement for him.

what pisses me off is that more people arent talking about it. Matthews had a 2-3 game stint in 2014 with high snaps and was lambasted for it.

People aren't that upset about it because he's currently the 6th best center in America as a true freshman.

The dirty little secret about Matthews was that he was never particularly good and largely lived off his name. In three years as a starter he never graded out higher than the 5th best center in the SEC. He was routinely one of the worst run blocking centers in the conference.

It's a tough job to balance blocking the biggest guy on the field, directing the rest of the line, and snapping the ball.

He's done a hell of a job, and the high snaps aren't ideal but other than this game he has been lights out at the rest.

We really need to get some under center formations.

The good news is my Middle School son is a Center who snaps it right on the money every time. Just need to hang in there until 2021

Oh, and if Sumlin wants to go ahead and give him a scholarship so I don't have to worry about paying for college I'm good with that.

I have no idea how something like that is evaluated and scored, but disrupting the play because the QB is chasing down the ball has to be a pretty big negative in the points.

i beg to differ. i could have sworn that PFF graded him as the best center in the SEC (at least at one point last season). even if not true, he was criticized for getting bull rushed but it seems people are overlooking mccoys deficiencies all because he can knock people off the ball.

I hate to be a whiner, but I don't even think that Knight's sub-par performance was the biggest problem on offense. Knight is a 5th-year senior and an interim solution. He gives us a short-term respite to find a QB.

But, as a former O-Lineman, I see major problems at Center.

Yes, the kid is young, but there is absolutely no excuse for failing to put the ball squarely in your QB's two hands just above waist-level EVERY time you snap the ball. NONE. The QB should not have to even THINK about where the ball will be coming. The QB should be able to close his eyes and field the snap ... EVERY FREAKING TIME.

As a Center, you practice it 500 times per day until it is like clockwork. If the starting QB needs to go, you snap it to the next guy ... and the next guy ... and then to the trainer. If you cannot make it clockwork, you need to be playing Guard.

There is not pressure on you until after the ball is snapped. Your FIRST job is to put the ball in the right place. THEN you worry about getting hit. If you are overly-worried about getting hit, again, you can play Guard.

ETA: I played Guard on offense, but handled the deep snaps on punts.

The snaps were low but this is indicative of a guy that is trying to snap his body up as quick as possible because of the rush that is coming. The lower the snap the harder he is trying to get his body up to take on the rush.

This should have been a clue that Bama was getting off the ball as fast as our guys were. A few times we didn't go on first sound and Bama jumped offsides. Probably could have got them 2 or 3 more times and slowed them down just a bit more.

Snapping in a vacuum isn't that hard but when there is a future first rounder in your grill, you often think about other things.

McCoy hadn't been a center before coming to A&M. He just needs to spend an hour a day snapping til he can do so without thought. Hard to fix in season though because there are already so many things they have going on (class, weight room, game prep, etc).
