Every time I mention Petrino I get rained down on with shouts of bad guy, slimy, etc.
I'd love to have him, but I've always understood his buyout to be insane. Partly because Louisville took a "chance" on him in bringing him back, so they had a very good bargaining position.

Petrino is on his second stint with Louisville. During his first stint, in year one, he was secretly negotiating with Auburn to be their coach. He left Louisville after a few years and became the Atlanta Falcons head coach. He did not even complete a full season before he quit to take the Arkansas job.
The poor judgement with the affair at Arkansas is just the icing on the cake. I was surprised that Louisville hired him again.

Find me a successful coach that waited until the end of his contract to take a better job.
How often do programs wait for a contract to expire instead of firing a coach when it's time?
He's not Mike Sherman, but he's a winner. He's not art Briles either.

What exactly has Petrino done? Adultery with an AD employee? Moved to different teams?
He never beat Alabama.
Enough said...Next Candidate please?

Petrino has no record of maintaining sustained success anywhere. His successors at both Louisville and Arkansas both bemoaned the roster issues they inherited.
I would love Petrino as an OC, not as a head coach. I guess we will see if he is able to sustain in his second stint at Louisville. He certainly has a nice QB in Lamar Jackson.

His buyout is $10 million. That is nuts.

I really don't think we're going to fire him unless we lose to UTSA

I hope we don't. Firing Sumlin after an eight win season would be controversial in our fan base, which means the wallets might not open up for either a top coach or top coordinators post-Sumlin. I keep reminding myself that if Sumlin would have had Chavis money to hire his #1 pick for DC day one the last few years would have been very different.
Plus I wouldn't mind seeing Chad work another year at SMU. He seems like the most obvious answer we have had in a while and it would be nice to know for sure.

What about firing him after a 7-win season?

I think losing to UTSA will get rid of the buy-in problem among Aggies. So will his team bottoming out next year.

Y'all deserve better than what you have now

I'm with you on the bottoming out. I don't see us firing him this year after 3 8-win seasons in a row. But next year, when he goes 5-7 with the team we've watched play the last two weeks, I think he'll be donezo. Maybe that's for the best. It give us one more year to see what Morris can do.

If we fire Sumlin now we would face the media scorn Nebraska faced after the whole Solich firing. "He averaged nine wins there and they had an average of 7 wins the decade before" or whatever.
It would be nice to have a clean slate and a positive start if we have to reboot.

The difference is that Nebraska fired Solich because he wasn't Tom Osborne.
We already face media scorn because since 2014, A&M is about to be a collective 8-16 after game 5.

If Chad Morris gets SMU to a bowl he'll get a hard look. The guy is beloved by Texas HS coaches and would recruit like a boss here.
The shine hasn't worn off of Herman to those in coaching circles like it has to fans. He'll go to Texas if offered though, it's his dream job.
IMO, Chad Morris >> Herman. Herman has looked less than impressive this season with the exception of the OU win in week 1

SMU may very well finish the year with a better record than us.

I've made no secret about my love for Morris the last few years but no, just no.
