247 Shows Mattison was also targeting Malik Jefferson, perhaps they know each other at least a little bit.

I had a thought. Don't fire anyone on the defensive side of the ball, Sumlin isn't going to replace our WR coach, going to make Jeff Banks the new WR coach. Durkin will be Co-DC/ST coach. I believe he has experience coaching special teams.

That is also a thought, but just like we want to keep Anderson to get Jefferson we want Wyatt to get Lodge. This is starting to be like seating people at a wedding.
What are the hard rules with assistants? I mean, is it like the roster where it has to be 85 at a certain date or is it more like at any point you can't go above a certain number?
Because if it is the former and not the latter why not keep both on staff for now and have a LB coaching competition that ends sometime before Spring ball?

NCAA Article 11 I believe
1 - head coach
9 - assistant coaches
2 - graduate assistant coaches
those rules do not apply to Strength & Conditioning Coaches, but the SEC just recently placed limitations on how many a team can have.

so we have,
Offense
1. Spavital (OC)
2. Anderson (OL)
3. Banks (ST/TE)
4. McKinney (RB)
Defense
5. Hagan (LB)
6. Joseph (DB)
7. Price (DL)
8. Mattison?
9. Durkin?
here is what the "rule" defines as a coach or assistant coach: 11.7.2.1 Exceptions to Number Limits FBS - No individual other than coaches designated to fill the coaching categories set forth in Bylaw 11.7.2 may participate in any manner in the coaching of the intercollegiate team of a member institution during any football game, practice or other organized activity, with the following exceptions

simple, we turn one or more into "executive recruiting assistants" like Bama
Posted on 12/17/14 at 2:51 pm to Old Sarge
but if they participated in the coaching, practice or other organized team activities, we would be in violation of NCAA bylaws
those executive recruiting assistants do not coach players

So make banks wr and then durkin s/t?
Posted on 12/17/14 at 3:27 pm to leoj
I have not heard a single indication that this is the actual plan, but if we are hiring co-DCs this might be a logical reach
Posted on 12/17/14 at 3:33 pm to Warrior Poet
Yeah total crazy talk. My question is can banks even coach wr?

I don't have a clue. Here's his resume, looks like he coached some WRs for the Raiders.
Jeff Banks Resume
Maybe Banks could coach running backs and McKinney could coach receivers

He was a big part of the Murray and Kirk commitments. I'm holding out for improved playcalling under Sumlin's guidance.

It's for the liberty bowl preview. I don't think it will address the DC

Yeah, it's not terrible.
Individually, I think either would be an improvement over Snyder. Together, they could create a pretty good situation.
Apparently Durkin is the one who wanted to bring Mattison in, so it does seem like he's willing to play ball so that he can have a chance to prove himself as an elite DC
