Will the defense improve this year? That's the only thing I see lacking.

That is legitimately the number one question for me this year. At this point I could care less about Sumlin, recruiting or our offense. I mean I have high hopes for Kirk and I hope we have some draft picks but I have given up dreaming that Sumlin is some sort of offensive genius.

All I want to know is how well Chief does at his job this year because it will probably shape my perceptions of the viability of defensive-minded coaches leading our program for over a decade. If he fails then frankly I don't think anyone can succeed with Texas talent, and I would hope as a program we go full steam in the other direction to fully embrace basketball in cleats.

tldr: If Chief can't make our defense not be pussies in three years I will believe no one can.

So if not then we just go all in on Chip's offense?

That would be the best case scenario.

At the very least I hope we can just accept that the Wrecking Crew is dead and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

I'm here everyday but unfortunately I've been banned from posting on tRant for 13 months and counting. I miss that place. Need someone to advocate on my behalf RE: my reformation as a poster and commitment to being a positive contributor on the SEC Rant forum.

Sigh.

I have no mouth but I must Rant.

And it's going to be a god-awful football season. We'll all be over here bitching because anyone that utters one foul word about the emperor on TexAgs will be banished.

I agree. I am a 100% Chipper.

Hiring a defensive coach would be a disaster. Stop chasing that dragon, guys. Texas HSs are almost all spread teams. The best players are put on offense starting in Jr. High and defensive coaching here is awful. You can't start a timber business in Kansas because it doesn't have the raw material in sufficient quantity. At this point, you can't have a defense-first Texas college team for the same reason.

So if you know you are going to have to go all-in on offense, there is a man for that: Chip.

I don't know why we all assume this is unique to Texas. Spread offenses have taken over the country- it's old news. There's good defenders out there, it just takes more effort to find em. Gary Patterson does.

It's not unique to Texas, but it's total ubiquity within Texas is unique among states.

Yeah, in the Southeast, where we aren't successful at recruiting, aside from offensive guys at IMG who are from Texas originally and pothead frickups that LSU doesn't want.

Gary Patterson does.

No, he doesn't. He played against the Mountain West and now the Big 12. His level of competition was low making his defensive talent seem better than it was/is. His guys would get ROLLED against an SEC conference schedule.

I guess he gets no credit for shutting Ole Miss down a few years ago. Or toppling Wisconsin a while back. Come on, he fields solid defenses, stop letting the conference bragging crap cloud your judgement. And he doesn't recruit the SE.

In my opinion he DOESN'T get credit for that, no. Lesser teams can get up for one big game where they topple a bigger program. It's a completely different thing entirely to play a team on that level week after week. The conference schedule of the SEC would grind Gary Patterson's little twinks and his 4-2-5 into dogmeat and at the end of the season his beat to shite team would be losing nothing bowls to Louisville, just like us. He has NOT been finding SEC caliber defenders. He's been finding guys who can slow the spread in the MWC and the Big 12.
