A lot of melting happened in this thread

indeed

Bring Phil Bennett home

Bennett was a disaster in his last stint at A&M and RC fired him. His defenses for Baylor outside of last year (which was pretty much a mirage as we learned in the Fiesta) have been abysmal. On a weekend our defense played pretty well and his just gave up 58 points to TCU...he's the suggestion???

someone wake me when this melt ends

No shite. The current melt is so bad I've had trouble even getting into football discussions.

- fire everyone
-bring back Sherman as O line coach (actual thread on the Zoo)
-Kyle Field has lost everything that made it unique
-all traditions are dead
-we're "tu on the Brazos" (actual quote from the Zoo)
-Ole Miss and MSU came out of nowhere and must not be any good because I haven't been paying attention to them for the last 3 years

Yeahhhh...lets take a deep breath.

That's pretty bold. I think Hill is limiting what we can call on offense.

Spavital used to be the QB coach. He has had 2 years with Hill, one as QB coach and another as OC. A lot of the responsibility comes down on him. Its his job to develop the QBs and Kenny Hill has struggled, especially since this type of offense is supposed to make guys like Connor Halliday and Graham Harrell look like All American QBs.

quote:

And I don't get why you think Sumlin is stubborn, he demoted McKinney after the regular season when it was obvious he wasn't working

He's shown in the past to be a bit stubborn at times. The QB controversy with Terrance Broadway at UofH was one of my main concerns. He also displays a bit of cockyness, arrogance, and stubbornes in his press conferences. This is not a bad thing, but it can get in the way of coaches choosing between winning vs proving a point. Dangerously fine line to walk on, but so far Sumlin has done everything right. I just hope he continues.

If you haven't figured it out by now, I am still in full melt down mode. I don't know why, because our preseason predictions were 7-5 or 8-4. Full melt down nonetheless.

At some point we do need to look at whose players were better: Sherman's unheralded diamonds in the rough recruited while we were in the depth of suck or Sumlin's supposed all-stars?

While the jury is still out, things aren't looking great for Sumlin. The O-line has regressed HORRIBLY. We now have only two WR who can catch the football, and one is injured. His QBs both suck arse - one can't throw beyond 10 yards and the other throws only picks. The defense was best his first year, with Sherman's players. None of these RBs are going to the NFL at this rate.

Maybe all this Mack-style big star recruiting isn't what it is cracked up to be.

The best RB on the roster right now is White and he doesn't even play.

Say what? That's a reach, mane

Plenty of coaches are taciturn in press conferences. We sit here an celebrate when he says "get a dog," or "speak for yourself," but then say that's why he proves a point over winning?

I'm sorry, that's preposterous.

We have a 19 year old True Soph at QB who has all of 7 games under his belt.

Contrary to what our fanbase may think after Johnny, most underclassmen do no rush onto the national stage and compete for Heisman trophies from day one.

The O-line needs some work. Sherman recruited one of the best O-lines in the game, we all know that. But most of his guys are graduated and gone now. Sumlin needs to maintain that talent level or things are going to drop off. This is a legitimate concern.

As for defense, the folks talking about how the "youth excuse" only counts for one year weren't paying attention in the offseason. When the young players that mature and emerge as stars over the course of their first year get kicked off the team in the offseason, to be replaced by the new freshmen who were supposed to be their backups. You have a young defense again. If we can keep our defensive starters from getting arrested/suffering serious injuries then we'll actually have some experience coming back on defense next year, and that will benefit us greatly.

And to answer the OP, when Sumlin starts losing a bunch of games we should easily win ala Sherman, then I'll start reassessing my confidence in the man. As things are, we've lost to two teams that are quite possibly the best two teams in the country, in what was always expected to be a down year for us. I'm not panicking.

Ogbuehi, Harrison, Gramling, Compton, and Cheek are all still there. That's 5/9 if you include Lewis, Joeckel, Matthews, and Klinke.

I didn't mean to say his press conferences will make or break him. I merely meant to show that he comes across a bit too rough on press conferences and if he carries that same attitude to team decision making, that may not be a good thing. (Keyword is may. I don't know dick about coaching so maybe the guys respond well to him).

I don't know. I'm still in full melt down mode so I'm being picky about anything I can find. Sumlin and Manziel spoiled me.

Sumlins record is 25-6. I believe there should be high standards, but remember that Ole Miss and Miss St might be the 2 most experienced teams on the schedule this year. At least at QB they are.

We KNOW the defense is going to struggle because we frankly don't have enough skill at the LB position right now (For various reasons already mentioned).

We also KNOW the offense should be performing better, and Sumlin and Spav need to get the issues fixed. Talent isn't the problem, inexperience is. So the players need to play to their potential, and Spav needs to improve scheme/play calling to get the offense back on track.

Edit: responding to Roger

The defense is not the cause for my melt. It was going to be bad regardless because we just don't have the players, what players we did have got arrested, and what players we will have are just freshmen.

The offense though, is melt-worthy. Most of the meltyness is QB development, or lack thereof.

Kenny, who's been actively regressing before our eyes, won a Texas 5A state championship, and was MVP of the game, in a *similar offense.* So yeah, he's a sophomore, but that means he's had 2 years in our offense and 4 years in a similar one in HS. And he didn't start his regression against State, either, so it isn't the level of competition, because he was playing poorly against Rice & SMU as well. This offense just will not work if it can't threaten beyond 10 yards because the defense can cheat up to take away the short game completely. Will. Not. Work.

Kyle Allen, who was the #1 QB recruit in AMERICA, looks atrocious. He can't go three passing plays without throwing a terrible, obvious interception. He's seemingly retarded.

So here we are, in a SYSTEM offense that made the castoff meth-head inbred spare parts trash heap QBs that Texas Tech had look like Greek GODS, and our 5A state champion MVP and overall national #1 QBs are incapable of running it. That shite is abso-fricking-lutely on Sumlin and Spavital. What on earth is Coach Spaz doing with them that their heads have just imploded?

how many games other than A&M have you actually ever watched?

all those Tech QBs didnt come out firing off perfectly in their first year starting. Many of them had growing pains. Same thing at Okie Light, West Virginia and everywhere else that runs a similar offense.

There is some quality melt on this thread.

Kenny has had a couple of rough outings and he may not be the long term answer but he is learning. You simply can't compare the old Tech offenses or certainly Texas HS football to the types of defenses Kenny is playing against. Experience matters. If you have a vet defense against a green offense sometimes bad things happen. A vet defense can get really good at disguising coverages and confusing a young QB. They aren't having to think about what they are doing, they just know.

The biggest concern for me on Kenny is his confidence seemed a little shaky the last couple of games. The most encouraging sign to me was he seemed to get some comfort building with Speedy, unfortunately he waited until too late in both games. Kenny clearly is missing Kennedy as his safety blanket.

This is still a very talented team with a lot of potential, we just have some weaknesses that really good teams are exploiting. The real test is what they do now, can they get it together and get one of the Auburn/Bama games? If so then this sets up to still be a nice season even if it isn't a great season.
