Nothing is wrong with a song that gets the fans pumped up. That is the point of having a DJ.
What is wrong is that the program, that existed for over 100 years before Sandstorm existed as a song, has tried to claim ownership over the song. I think this is pathetic because:
1. Sometime in the last 100 years yall should have had SOMETHING else to cling to songwise
2. The fact that yall cling to such a recent song is a great analogy for how USC fans cling to a high point in their 100+ year history.
Prior to Spurrier USC was kinda like the Iowa St. of the SEC. Just like USC claimed Sandstorm, Iowa St. claims "Sweet Caroline." Basically the exact same situation.
The difference is Iowa St is cute because they are a Mountain West team really anyway once the other shoe drops. With USC it leaves me with a feeling of:
quote:
Don't you dare talk to me about Clemson and stealing
I thought that would get a rise.

That should answer the question of

You think we should have clung to some old song because of how well we used to do? It's not like we don't have a fight song, alma mater, other regular cheers the band plays.
We also come out to 2001. Is that okay because we adopted that way allllllllllllllll the way back in the 1980s?
It's funny you bring up Sweet Caroline. I think it was 2007 or 2009 in a home game vs UF. We were supposed to get blown out, but by the end of the 3rd QT we were down by less than a TD, had the ball, and were driving. The 3rd QT ended and the crowd was wild with excitement, ready to start the 4th... right before the 3rd QT started they played Sweet Caroline.... the crowd died. I've never seen a mood killed in a game before that didn't actually have anything to do with what happened on the field.
They stopped playing it after all the complaints.
If it gets a crowd excited and loud, what the hell does it matter?
There are actually several UGA player quotes, from Gurley included, about how the overdose of Sandstorm frustrated them and got in their heads.
eta: Hell, you kicked our butts and it still bothered you.

Optimally you would have a major artist make a song for your program that you can play. Any connection (the writer was an alumni, the singer came from your state, etc.) is better than nothing.

It doesn't, I am not against having a certain song that pumps the crowd. My favorite team, the New Orleans Saints, have a touchdown song that they play every time for that reason. I would be a hypocrite to criticize playing the same song in the stadium to pump up the crowd.
That is not what is happening though. USC fans are internalizing the Sandstorm so much that they are playing it OUTSIDE the stadium as a way to REPRESENT THE ENTIRE PROGRAM. The link I posted has an example of it being played in church services in that state.
Or the story of how someone blasted it out of their vehicle as a retort to our courthouse yells. That action implies that someone SO strongly associates that song with the program that they expect OTHERS to do the same thing. The mere action implies that USC football, a minor blip in the sports world, can take ownership of one of the most popular stadium songs in the last decade.
That is what is pathetic. That is what "rustles my jimmies."

This is such a silly argument/discussion. They like/play a song. What is the big deal?

the theGarnetWay doesn't post on here enough or we would have settled this last year. It is not a big deal.

I thought sandstorm was fun, even if you can't really say it's "their" song.... The crazy loud raptor-rooster scream was much more obnoxious. It was unique though, and definitely added to the experience.

Ok fine I conceed. USC can take as much ownership of Sandstorm as they want.

Trust me, I agree it's kind of silly to act like it's their thing. It is a super common arena song, that's 20 years old at this point. If they're into it though, it is what it is.
This past year I heard it at least once in every SEC game we played in.

The ol' Boomer Sooner tactic I see. Not a bad idea.

And we played it because of USCe.

It played at Auburn, State, and against Arky in Jerry world.

Its just so small time. That is what bugged me.
But then I remember the TCU fans bitching about Mr. WRTS, or the times I have lurked Big 10 forums and I remember that 90% of college football is small time compared to Bama fans or us.
I have to remind myself not everyone takes this all so seriously. Is just pisses me off that some of the programs that don't take themselves so seriously do so much better than us. That is my issue though, not USCs.
