Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.
A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel.

Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is that time again. Buzz ball might be letting us down at the moment, but Schloss is here to save the day. Lets talk some ball.

2023 Recap

...it was ight. We failed to recapture that magic from 2022. We have lofty goals (preseason #5) and only made a regional final out west at Stanford, but ultimately lost going 0-2 in the final 2 games.

Our returning studs were inconsistent. Our pitching didn't improve. It kind of sucked.

38-27 (14-16)

2023-24 Offseason

1. See yah later, Yeskie. Pitching coach Nate Yeskie got poached by Lsu. I am not mad about it either. He came in with a ton of hype and lived up to none of it. The only part of our pitching I did like was that we played matchups. Every game felt like a chess match. IDK if that was Nate or Jim or a little of both.

Welcome MAX WEINER. This guy can win a press conference, that is fore sure. He's got me very excited. Young, analytical, and from a very interest Seattle Mariniers org who have developed a boatload of young pitching talent.

Getting to Know Pitching Coach Max Weiner

2. The portal giveth.

Texas A&M Transfer Ranking #4

D1 Baseball Top 130:
1. Braden Montgomery (Stanford) - One of Baseball America's 10 most intriguing transfers
13. Ali Camarillo (Cal St Northridge)
22. Eldridge Armstrong (San Diego St)
46. Ted Burton (Michigan)
85. Tanner Jones (Jacksonville St)
89. Zane Badmaev (Tarleton St)
96. Hayden Scott (Columbia)
-none of our guys leaving cracked the top 130-

More on Montgomery:
Montgomery transferring out of Stanford was the biggest story line in the portal this past summer, and he’s now looking to make a huge impact for the Aggies in the SEC. Montgomery gets the top spot for being a dual-threat type of player. Though he’s still refining his stuff on the mound, Montgomery will get into the mid-90s with his fastball, and the fastball and slider both have whiff rates well above 50%. As for his offensive skill set, he’s already a very accomplished hitter, batting .336 last season with 14 doubles, a triple, 17 home runs and 61 RBIs, along with a 1.072 OPS. Montgomery’s role for the Aggies on the mound is still undetermined, but he will fit nicely with Jace LaViolette and company in the middle of that offensive lineup.

More on Camarillo:
The Aggies had a great deal of success with Hunter Haas in the program last season, and they’re hoping Camarillo has a similar impact. He’s coming off a strong sophomore season with the Matadors, where he hit .371 with 15 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 44 RBIs. Camarillo also is a solid defender.

3. Fresh Meat

Texas A&M Freshman Ranking #4

Arguably Schloss's best class since coming to A&M.

Snippet from D1.

THE HEADLINERS: Last year, the Aggies had one of the nation’s premier freshmen in lefthanded hitting outfielder Jace LaViolette. That could very well be the case yet again this spring with the addition of California product Gavin Grahovac. Grahovac can play in the outfield or infield, but the Aggies are playing him at the hot corner for the upcoming season. He was solid there defensively this past fall. But his greatest attributes are at the plate. At 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, Grahovac physically reminds me a lot of former Texas Tech standout and Rangers slugger Josh Jung. Grahovac has a sweet swing and some big time pop from the right side. Everything off his bat is hard contact. Clearly, there’s always a transition with any freshman to big-time Division I Baseball. But Grahovac looks ready made from the start … On the mound, the Aggies have a pair of ultra-talented arms to watch this spring. The first is righthander Isaac Morton, who might not be in school if not for an injury last season. Morton is a 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, with serious projection, who was up to 95-96 mph with his fastball this past fall, while also showing a slider in the mid-80s to go with a changeup. Morton has good poise and is slated to be an instant impact arm. The same could go for lefty and Maryland prep product Kaiden Wilson. Wilson is up to 96-97 mph with his fastball and reminds Jim Schlossnagle of former TCU standout lefty Brandon Finnegan in terms of his stuff and makeup.

CONTRIBUTORS: OF Caden Sorrell & Jett Johnston. INF Jack Bell. RHP rett Antolick.

Baseball America's "25 College Baseball Freshmen Who Could Help Shape The 2024 Season"
Gavin Grahovac, 3B/UTL, Texas A&M
-Grahovac brings physicality, raw power and defensive versatility to the Aggies.

Perfect Game Top 75 Freshmen List
28. Caden Sorrell
40. Gavin Grahovac
70. Weston Moss
75. Kaiden Wilson

4. Don't Call It a Comeback

We have a strong core coming back led by Jace Lavaliote and Ryan Targac.

Baseball America's "Five Seniors to Know"
-Ryan Targac, 2B, Texas A&M. Targac is coming off of a tough season, but if he can recapture his 2022 form, when he hit .294/.430/.569 with 15 home runs, he could help propel the Aggies back into SEC contention.

Most of the returners are on the bump: Justin Lampkin, Chris Cortez, Ryan Prager, & Troy Wansing. This group needs to take the next step.

Preseason Expectations & Awards

Preseason Rankings
-D1Baseball: #8
-Baseball America: #11
-Perfect Game: #7
-NCBWA: #10
-Coaches Poll: #10

more to be released

All Americans

Braden Montgomery
-2nd Team - OF - D1Baseball
-1st Team Hitter - OF - Perfect Game
Outfield: Braden Montgomery, Texas A&M
If Chase Burns was the biggest name in the transfer portal then Braden Montgomery is probably on equal footing, as he shockingly departed Stanford and will be spending his draft year in College Station. Montgomery has a silky smooth swing from both sides of the plate and OPS’d over 1.000 with seventeen home runs for the Cardinal last year. He’s got an absolute cannon from the outfield and should pitch some too. Montgomery is another name on this list with top ten draft and Golden Spikes upside.

-1st Team All-SEC - OF - Perfect Game
.336-17-61; coordinated w/ hit tool-pop combo; 80 arm who can pitch too

Jace LaViolette
-1st Team - OF - D1Baseball
-2nd Team Hitter - OF - Perfect Game
-1st Team All-SEC - OF - Perfect Game
.287-21-63; freak athlete, can run & throw; big juice, 18 SB in '23; pot. 1:1 in '25

Justin Lamkin
-1st Team All-SEC - SP - Perfect Game
5.92 ERA, 59.1 IP, 74:32 K:BB; ticked up in stuff, starter's kit arsenal, + CH

more to be released

Projected Lineups & Rotations

Per D1
C - Max Kauer
1B - Ted Burton
2B - Ryan Targac
3B - Gavin Grahovac
SS - Ali Camarillo
LF - Hayden Schott
CF - Jace LaViolette
RF - Braden Montgomery
DH - Jett Johnston

SP1 - Justin Lampkin
SP2 - Tanner Jones
SP3 - Chris Cortez
SP4 - Ryan Prager
Closer - Zane Badmaev

I am not exactly sure how I would change things, but I think Kent is going to crack the lineup somewhere. As good as Kauer was at a young age last season, we may be better with Appel. He's got the better bat. Sorrell is really highly thought of, but where does he go? This is a very good problem to have. Too many good players and not enough ABs to go around.

I have a friend that wants to go to an A&M baseball game, so might actually visit BBP this spring. I have a few customers in Texas that I can visit, and minimize costs to do so.

Do it.

My recommendations
-Assuming you want to show him at our best, then come for an SEC Friday or Saturday.
-Spend the money to lock in seats. No one wants to sit on the grass.
-There is a random window in the spring where the weather is perfect. Too early and Olsen feels like Antarctica, too late and you're on the surface of the sun.

I secured opening weekend tickets (Friday night). My buddy has an in with a certain new coach. I am trying to milk it as much as possible.

If anyone needs some baseball talk fix...

Schloss In Studio with TexAgs

Schloss Talking to the Media

Ryan Brauninger Talks Aggie Baseball on SEC Unfiltered

My biggest takeaways from Brauny:

Weekend Rotation:
-LHP Justin Lampkin
-RHP Tanner Jones
-LHP Ryan Prager

Also mentioned Cortez out of the pen, Isaac Morton having a legit freshman arm, and Brock Peery being a righty submarine guy who gets a ton of usage.

Some Expected Starters
-Camarillo vs Kent at SS
-Ted Burton at 1B
-Targac at 2B
-Grahovac at 3B - said he comes in with similar hype as Jace did last year

Specifically mentioned to play close attention to Blake Binderup. He was a 2-way player from CS who red-shirted last year. He focused on hitting, lifted big, and now he projects to make an impact in the middle of the lineup.

Schloss & Ryan both made it clear nothing has been decided. These next 3 weeks of practice and scrimmage on the field will matter a bunch.

As he probably should be. You can't have 3 sub 30-win seasons in a row when you have the baseball resources of MSU.
