Ed Oliver isnt at Houston for Herman. He's an absolute stud and will get drafted from UH in 2 years anyway.

Yeah Oliver is a three year player, it would be idiotic for him to waste one of those not playing

Is Jalen Hurd a grad this year? I would take Hurd as a HB/TE prospect.

A&M was led to believe that we had a crappy DL class, but now 3* Tyree Johnson has been invited to the Under Armour game.

He now joins Army All American and 3* DT Jayden Peevy at an All star game.

Tyree is a beast. Peevy is pure potential.

Jalen Hurd won't come here. He wants to play in a more pro-style offense. I don't think we've even had a play from under center this year.

It sucks that he won't get to experience a true college life at a real football program. The university of Houston is full of commuter fair weather fans who only show up when their team is undefeated.

we look good at DT for the near future. What about DE though? seems like madubuike is destined to move inside and lockhart is more of a run defender.

Jarrett Johnson has 1.5 sacks in 19 SEC games.

Qualen Cunningham has zero in 21 SEC games.

And how many snaps are they actually playing?

I flipped over to the Tech v TCU game in 4th Q and it looked like there were a lot of empty seats from goal line to goal line down low. I was kind of surprised. Reminded me of Rice at home.

Other programs used Sumlin's "hot-seat" to negatively recruit against us last year.

It would be nice if A&M could use Sumlin's COY nomination for positive recruiting.

For 2016, Johnson has played 125 snaps in SEC play, with 1.5 sacks. (on the bright side, all 1.5 have come in the last 2 games, so maybe he's turning a corner). Qualen has played 105 snaps in SEC play w/ 0 sacks.

For the entire 2015 season, Johnson played 239 snaps, and Cunningham 229. Dont know how many were in SEC play, but they played roughly half the snaps of the starters over the whole year. Neither guy recorded a sack in SEC play.

No clue how many snaps each played in 2014. Neither recorded a sack in SEC play.

They also play predominantly on run downs because they are resting MG and Hall who are coming back out in second-and-long and third-down situations.

Chief has been extremely high on our DE backups this year, and I think I'll trust his judgment until I see otherwise after they are the main guys.

That being said, we probably need to build up some more depth at the position, given what we are losing this year.

Having played 4-3 DE (in HS, I know, wah, wah, but the basic philosophy is the same), if you are not told via signal to rush, you do NOT freaking rush. You play the outside shoulder of the last lineman to the sideline. Your job is contain. The footwork is different, the whole mindset is different (than rushing the passer). Even when opportunities present themselves (for sacks), you are still very cautious about committing, unless it is just right there or there was a missed assignment and you get a blindside look, because you do not want to get burned on an option or screen when your JOB is containment. If you rush when no one told you to, you are going to get freaking dogstomped by your coach.

SO - seeing as how we use different personnel for passing downs vs running downs and our passing down guys are normally rushing, it is really 0% surprising that our rushing down (contain to the sideline) guys have almost no sacks. It's not in their job description.

As an aside, this is also why the "why is Myles rushing deep on a running play and leaving a big gap?" complaints are so dumb. He's not the one making that decision. He was instructed via sideline signal, pre-snap, to rush and he's just doing his job. Be mad at the coaches for getting their run/pass prediction wrong, but Myles is just doing what his coach said.

We've got one in the pipes already. His name is Micheal Clemons. #9 overall JUCO player, 100% solid to A&M from what I hear.

Yep. Don't get me wrong, the backups don't seem as solid as MG and Hall, but that is to be expected and they have room for growth. They seem like they're pretty good at disrupting things overall.
