Our front seven situation absolutely terrifies me. We literally have to have all-time great A&M freshman seasons from at least 2-3 guys in that group to be anything approaching "good". And God forbid if Garrett isn't the all-SEC player many are counting on him to be right out of the gate.

When you look at Garrett's measurements, his wingspan, his weight, his speed, and his strength measurements, it's hard to imagine how he couldn't get significant playing time on most SEC defensive squads.

He may or may not be a world beater from day one, but as far as him being a quality contributor I'm just not as concerned about him as I am about others.

The front 4 really are stronger than most people think. The linebackers are a big question mark. The secondary is either going to be solid or just terrible under Joseph's leadership. We saw flashes of brilliance with Raven and Matthews in the past, and my only hope is that Joseph can coach them up to be proficient.

I am a lot more concerned about LB play than any other position as well.

I was encouraged by Mastrogiovanni's comments about Hillard the other day and how well he is doing. That might help if true.

But either way we have zero depth at linebacker, so assuming we can get a starting lineup that is decent, if they are resting or heaven forbid injured, the burden is going to shift entirely to the Dline and the secondary. I think the line can handle it but the big question mark at that point will be the secondary under a new DB coach.

Could be a huge season if you drink just a little Koolaid

Lots of interesting variables to this team.

Overall I look at it this way.

We possibly could have the most talented offense in the SEC with a coach who has a proven ability to produce on that side of the ball. Young QB may mean some ups and downs, but good RB, OL, and WR can compensate.

On defense, I feel like the talent is there to be average, which is what we need to get us through this year. It could be another shite show, but Snyder still has me believing after the 2012 performance.

If we can avoid a lot of unlucky breaks, this season could be better than most expect. Im not saying 10 wins, but 9-3 is not unrealistic to me either.
Plus, Sumlin and his coaching staff have to make up for some of our deficiencies. We are paying him big money for a reason.

Sumlin gets us to 9 wins this year I'm laying down money on a natty in 2015.

fify

I'm with bobag. The talent is there to have a decent defense. If we were looking at a lot of problems caused by physical limitations (like we know Dustin Harris didn't get any bigger), then there would be little room for hope.

But most of the problems we had last year had little to do with athleticism and more to do with players not knowing where to be. Those problems can be corrected in the off season with film and time with coaches.

Even guys who played a lot last year aren't known quantities. Some got bigger, some got faster, and hopefully they all got more knowledge of the system. It also sounds like more of them are playing their natural positions rather than just filling holes. Some may also have regressed; we'll just have to wait and see.

Oh yeah, it's also an even numbered year which have been producing surprisingly effective defenses lately. We can't overlook the predictive power of historical trends!

tl,dr: Maybe they improved, maybe not, but I'm not going to concede that we will have another shitty defense until I see it.

I'm not expecting 9 wins but I'm not going to be shocked if it happens when Sumlin is our coach.
Lose @USC, @AU,@UA, and the rest are all winnable games IMO.
If we stay healthy, I think 8-4 is very realistic and 9-3 is obtainable with some breaks going our way.

I saw a headline on 247 that Cunningham may be moving to Linebacker.

Maybe some help is coming to Mastro

At this point you could convince me of going 9-3 or going winless in conference play.

I have no idea what to expect with this season. my mentality leans towards the negative, but would be overjoyed by a surprise.

With all of the arrests, young d and a new qb I'm definitely concerned at this point.

5th & 18th is pretty good? 20 wins combined. 2 bowls wins in pretty big bowls too.

Normally I wouldn't disagree, but when you factor in the preseason expectations of last year, and having one of the goat qb's I think it's fair to feel let down a bit by last season.

Damontre Moore staying would have put us in a BCS bowl.

Not sure if he alone would have done it, but then again just a marginal defense and we're talking about a completely different season.

A defense in the 70 range gives us 10 wins, but I'm not expecting 10 wins this year.
