Hi UT fans,

You graciously let me join this board a couple of years ago when I told your admins that my father in law is a huge UT fan. He grew up in LaFollette.
He is turning 80, and my wife is trying to figure out something special/different to do for him. He's still a huge UT fan, and my wife had the idea of trying to see if we could bring him to Knoxville and perhaps tour some of the athletic facilities. Not sure if UT does this or not, but was looking for advice on who to contact within the athletic department to see if we can arrange something. Any advice?

Oh, and for you trouble, a couple of things. I have a dog named Summitt after Pat, my wife is a huge Pat Summitt fan, and

1-29.

Contact the AD/CBJ with your story. They've been great with outreach and an 80 year old fan is right up their alley. I'll try to think of other stuff too but you should def. do that first. I'm not sure who exactly to contact tho. Maybe Condredge Holloway or other guys who do fan stuff. AD Hart is worth a try but he's so busy. Also cc to the entire coaching staff. I'm fairly sure if you can manage to it in front of the peeps that deal with it they'd make a tour happen.

Thanks Prof, will try to find a phone number. He would love to meet Butch, but I doubt there would be a way to do that unless it just happened that Butch was wondering around at the same time we were there.

Will contact the AD office and see what they tell me.

Even Arky fans?

I will try to contact the AD's office next week and see what I can do. Not sure how busy the athletic offices are during the summer, thought that would be the perfect time to try to arrange a tour.

So my wife called this morning and talked to someone in the AD's office. They were exteremely nice, and said we could come and they would provide a tour, just to schedule it first. Will probably do that one day next week if I can work it into my schedule.

Thanks for the feedback. And out of respect, I will not wear any UK gear while on campus.

Just a heads up, Cumberland Ave traffic is murder right now because of the construction. Avoid it at all costs and use Neyland/Hall of Fame/etc to get around that.

An update and a bit more info requested. We have our tour booked now, and are keeping it a secret from my FIL. Will basically drive him right up to Neyland before we tell him what we are doing.

It looks like with the timing of it all, we will finish our tour around 4pm, and was thinking a good cap to the day would be a nice meal somewhere around campus and close to I75 so we can jump back on and head home afterward. Any advice on where to eat?

You are just around the corner from a Ruth's Chris. You also have Calhoun's on the River, just down from the stadium. Either would be a good choice. Tons of other great places downtown, but getting in and out of them could be a hassle.

Go to Market Square and eat at Stock & Barrel. About 5-10 minutes from campus and right next to the interstate.

Holly's 135 is also in that area and a damn good place to eat.

I'll second Stock and Barrel and throw out Sweet Pea's on Jackson for a little more casual fare.

If Stock and Barrel is full as it tends to be, Blue Coast right next to it has pretty decent food. I'll also add that Aubrey's and Chop House are pretty good chain types and aren't overly expensive. There is prob one of each close to your route back.

Thanks all for the replies.

My wife had one more idea. If our tour is over by 4pm, she was wanting to see if we could run to Pigeon Forge to get some fudge and taffy, then maybe stop at Apple Barn to eat on our way back out and head home. Is that about 30 minutes from Knoxville?

I haven't been to that area in years, used to love Apple Barn. Is that a good idea or bad idea? I really don't want to get caught up in awful traffic trying to get back to interstate, but we will be there on a weekday, so maybe it won't be too bad. Any thoughts?

If you go via 411 (posters make sure I'm giving the right road here cuz it's been a while for me and I can't remember if it's 411 or 441) you can hit the beginning of PF without much hassle at all. 4pm on a weekday shouldn't be too bad and PF has also expanded its roads to help with the flow of traffic. I mean, you never know with PF (they have events going on all the time) but the Apple Barn really isn't that far into PF so if the traffic is bad it's still fairly easy to get back out again.

Both roads will get you there, but 441 (Chapman Hwy) is a much less crowded way to get to PF and it'll be convenient if you go that way from campus. There is not a chance I would take 40E as that exit is under construction and always packed.

You can count Ohio tags if you get bored.

441 (Chapman Hwy)

Robert,

Sounds familiar. I learned a bit of a trick for me anyway, when I used to go to PF from Lexington. Instead of getting on 40, just go straight into Knoxville, past the space needle (and if I recall right, Neyland), and continue on that direction. Isn't that Chapman Hwy? If I remember right, it comes out at an intersection in Sevierville and you turn right, and go past some businesses, then another right and you are on the way to PF.

But, you would do that same route out, and not try to go to 40? Great advice, thank you!

Edit: Wife is putting together a travel itinerary to give to her dad tomorrow, and I'm going to buy hime a UT hat somewhere right now to give to him.
