How is John Ward doing these days?

Haven't heard much about him but still hear him belting out those NATURAL. GAS. radio bits when I go back to the hills.

Hope he is well. I love him and he wasn't even apart of my fandom's past. I indoctrinated myself as a young Vol to love listening to his old calls. His last year on the mic in 98 was my kindergarten year, so I got the shaft with Kessling.
I did fortunately grow up with Bobby Denton as our PA Announcer, and I sure as hell miss his voice echoing throughout Neyland. And that is by no means a shot at Jeff.

I vaguely remember listening to Ward when I first got into Tennessee football during the Manning era. A very young David Ricky Rogers did not realize at that time just how damn good he was.

You definitely did. I recall the 1980 UGA game I think it was. Some guy named Hershell Walker didn't play in the first half but in the second half, John said, "Who IS that guy?"
I don't recall when/where I got it but someone dubbed the '98 Fiesta Bowl radio feed from the Vol Network over the ABC announcers Jackson and Griese. I taped it off the TV with VHS and now have it on a DVD. It is a one hour highlight show so it is just about perfect.
I will upload it to my Youtube channel if I can figure out how to do it. Yes I have a youtube channel.

The Fiesta Bowl was Ward's last football game. He also did the Basketball in '99. That was his last stint of UT broadcasting.

fricking Keith Jackson stole Ward's thunder when he announced the Fiesta Bowl would also be his last game.
Jackson spent the last few minutes of the national title game reflecting on his career instead of the game at hand and then the bastard decided to come back for another decade.

That may well explain why we got stuck with Kessling. Jackson would've been a better announcer but if he pulled that (and tbh, I don't remember that but stuff like that is easy to forget when it doesn't seem important to you at the time) then I could see him pissing off more than enough people to get him black balled from the job despite his talent when compared to Kessling's.
